The deaths of two 14-year-old schoolgirls at the abandoned Sungai Pari Flats in Ipoh have raised concerns over the safety of the neighbourhood near the neglected flat and the risks they may pose to the surrounding community.
The two teenagers, who were friends and students at the same school, were found at the abandoned flat on Friday, July 24, 2026, after they were reported missing. Police have since launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A security guard in the area revealed that the two girls’ family members had been searching for them before they were found. Their search eventually led them to the abandoned building, where the girls were discovered.
Perak Indian Traders Association renews demolition offer
Following the tragedy, the Perak Indian Traders Association announced its willingness to demolish the abandoned Sungai Pari flats for free as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The association’s president, K. Hari Krishnan, said the group had previously submitted proposals to the Perak state government in 2023 and 2024 to carry out the demolition works without any cost to the government.
He said the association was prepared to undertake the entire demolition process, including tearing down the structure, clearing construction debris, crushing waste materials and levelling the site.
The estimated cost of the demolition was previously around RM1.5 million, but the association said its contractor members were willing to contribute their services as a community effort. According to Hari Krishnan, the proposal was initially made due to concerns over the condition of the abandoned flats and the potential risks posed by the unused building.
Safety concerns surrounding abandoned structure
The call for demolition has brought attention to the wider issue of abandoned buildings and their impact on public safety.
The Sungai Pari Flats, which have remained vacant for years, have reportedly become a location of concern due to their deteriorating condition and accessibility. Abandoned structures can create safety risks as they may become vulnerable to trespassing, vandalism and other unwanted activities.
