A Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) student has taken a major step towards achieving his dream of becoming a pilot after receiving a full Pilot Cadet Training scholarship from International Aero Training Academy (IATAC) Sdn. Bhd.

Suria Viswanathan, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering graduate under UTHM’s Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (FKMP) was selected for the fully sponsored training programme.
The scholarship presentation ceremony was officiated by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh on 30th July 2026.
According to UTHM, the achievement reflects the faculty’s commitment to support students in pursuing careers beyond the traditional engineering field while producing graduates who are ready to complete globally.

A Journey from Engineering to Aviation
Although he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Suria has always been passionate about aviation.
He is currently undergoing flight training at the International Aviation Training Academy (IATAC) under the Melaka State Government’s full pilot sponsorship programme. He is also believed to be the first Indian recipient in Melaka ot receive the prestigious sponsorship.
Suria’s educational journey started at SJKT Durian Tunggal before continuing his studies at SMK Durian Tunggal. He later enrolled at the Royal Military College (RMC), where he served as a Sergeant and receive the Full Colour Award, experiences that helped build his leadership and discipline.
He later pursued his engineering degree at UTHM, where he graduated with First Class Honours.
Turning Dreams into Reality
Pilot training is know to be costly, with fees reaching close to RM500,000. Receiving the full scholarship is a important milestone in Suria’s journey towards becoming a commercial pilot.
UTHM described his achievement as an inspiration to students who aspire to pursue their dreams, regardless of the career path they choose.

The university also reaffirmed it’s commitment to empower students and encouraging them to aim higher, in line with it’s message. “Keep Chasing your Dreams, Fly as High as the Sky. The Sky is Not the Limit, but the Beginning.”
