India’s rising badminton star Tanvi Shama created history after becoming the youngest Taipei Open champion since Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying, following a memorable title-winning run at the BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament.
The 17 year old from Hoshiarpur, Punjab defeated Vietnam’s NguYen Thy Linh 21-16, 21-16 in the women’s singles final to claim her maiden Super 300 title. With the victory, Tanvi joined Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and Devika Sihag as India’s Super 300 title winners.
After her win, Tanvi said she was surprised by the achievement.
“I’m really very, very happy. I didn’t expect to win a title. I just wanted to give my best, take it match by match and play my own game,” she said.
Throughout the tournament, Tanvi impressed with her straight smashes, clever drop shots and calm attacking style. Although occasionally her opponent reduce the gap after building comfortable leads, she remained composed.
In the final, Tanvi took control of the opening game before scoring 21-16. She fell behind early in the second game but quickly regained momentum to build another strong lead.
The young shuttler was guided by coach Park Tae-sang, while her early badminton journey started under the guidance of her mother, who first introduced her to the sport.
The title was also a major boost after Tanvi’s recent disappointment of finishing runner-up at the World Junior Championships and recovering from dengue. Looking ahead, Tanvi said she hopes to continue improving as she gets prepared for bigger tournaments.
With this historic victory, Tanvi has proved herself as one of India’s brightest young badminton talents.
