Indian cinema has slowly changed the way women are shown on screen. Female characters are no longer limited to supporting roles or love stories. More films are now placing women at the centre of stories about family, ambition, motherhood, independence and justice.
In 2026, a few Indian films showed women’s strength in different ways. Some women fought against injustice, while others rebuilt their lives after betrayal. There were also women who reduced to let age, family pressure, or society decide how they should live.
Here are 5 Indian films in 2026 that went beyond entertainment and showed women taking control of their own lives.
1) Blast
Directed by Subash K. Raj, Blast is a Tamil action-family film staring Arjun Sarja, Preity Mukhundhan and Abhirami. The film follows Nila, who grows up in a family trained in karate. Her father, teaches her from a young age that she should know how to protect herself instead of always depending on others.
After losing her first karate match, Nila learns from her father that winning and losing are both part of becoming stronger. As she grows older, she becomes a brave and independent woman. She not only defends herself but also steps in when others are treated unfairly.
Nila is not shown as someone waiting to be saved. She takes on the kind of role that is usually given to a male hero. Her mother also joins the action, showing that the women in the family are just as strong and capable.
What it teaches us: Girls should not only be protected. They should also be raised to be confident, independent and able to stand up for themselves. The film shows that believing in yourself is an important part of becoming strong.
2) Made in Korea
Written and directed by Ra.Karthik, Made in Korea is a Tamil coming-of-age-comedy drama starring Priyanka Mohan, Rishikanth, Park Hye-Jin and Baek Si-hoon. The film is about Shenba, a young Tamil woman who has always loved Korean culture since she was a child. However, her parents wants her to stay at home, get married and take over a family business.
Shenba believes her longtime boyfriend, Mani, will support her dreams. Instead, he betrays her by sending her to South Korea through a fake job offer. She reaches Seoul alone, and unsure of what to do next. Instead of going back home, she tries to survive in a country that is completely new to her. Her life changes when she becomes a caretaker of an elderly Korean woman, Yeoh-ok. The two women form a close friendship and later open a restaurant together
Through this, Shenba slowly rebuilds her confidence and learns to create a life that does not depend on anyone.
The film is not only about travelling to Korea or following a childhood dream. It is about a woman learning that the end of a relationship does not mean the end of her future. Shenba and Yeoh-ok’s friendship also shows how women from different cultures and age groups can support one another.
What it teaches us: betrayal can make someone feel lost, but it can also lead to a new beginning. Shenba’s story reminds women not to build their whole future around another person. Even after disappointment, it is still possible to start again.
3) Thaai Kizhavi
Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, Thaai Kizhavi is a Tamil rural comedy-frama led by Radikaa Sarathkumar. Radhikaa plays the role of Pavunuthaayi, an elderly moneylender from a village in Madurai. She is known for being strict, brave and outspoken. Pavunuthaayi lives with her daughter, Suruli, and her grandson. When she suddenly becomes very ill, her 3 sons return home after being away for a long time.
However, their concern is not completely honest. After hearing that their mother may own a large amount of gold, they start to search for it. This leads to more dark but funny situations as the family tries to keep Pavunuthaayi alive long enough to find out where the gold is hidden. When she recovers, she refuses to let her children decide how she should use the wealth she earned through years of hard work.
The film also follows her daughter Suruli, who has to make an important decision about her unhappy marriage. What makes Thaai Kizhavi different is that it places an elderly woman at the centre of the story. Pavunuthaayi is not shown as a weak mother whose only role is to sacrifice her children. She is confident, brave and knows what she wants.
What it teaches us: women do not lose their identity or their right to happiness as they grow older. The film also reminds us that women are allowed to live for themselves too.
4) S Saraswathi
S Saraswathi is a Telugu suspense drama that marks Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s first film as a director. The large cast includes Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Kishore, Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma, Radikaa Sarathkumar, Nassar, Thulasi, Hareesh Peradi and Mime Gopi.
Varalaxmi plays Lakshmi, a government nurse and mother whose daughter, Saraswathi, goes missing after being dropped off at school for an Independence Day celebration.
What started as a desperate search soon becomes a long and painful fight for justice. Lakshmi has to deal with failures in the legal system and other institutions that are supposed to protect children. The film deals with child abuse and the failure of certain systems to protect children and punish those responsible. However, Lakshmi is not shown as a helpless mom, she continues to question the system and refuse to stop fighting for her daughter. The film has many twist and turns as it goes on.
S Saraswathi is also one of the most underrated films of 2026, it has a strong cast, important subject and marks Varalaxmi’s first film as a director.
What it teaches us: a mother’s fight for justice can require great courage, especially when the system itself becomes a problem. The film also reminds us that protecting children is not only the responsibility of parents. Schools, authorities, courts and society also have a role to play.
5) Nooru Saami
Directed by Sasi, Nooru Saami is a Tamil family drama starring Swasika and Vijay Antony. The cast includes Ajay Dhishan, Lijomol Jose, Karunas, Kavya Anil, Balaji Sakthivel and Aruldoss. The story is inspired by a real-life incident and focuses on motherhood, social pressure, and a woman’s right to decide how she wants to live.
The story is about Selvi, a widowed mother living in a traditional rural community. After losing her husband, she spends most of her life raising her two sons. During this time, she puts aside her own dreams, feelings and personal needs to care for her family. Years later, the idea of remarriage forces Selvi and the people around her to face belies about widows, motherhood, and a woman’s right to find love again.
The film is on emotional bond between a mother and her son. At the same time, it questions why society expects a widowed mother to give up the rest of her life simply because she has children.
What it teaches us: motherhood should not mean giving up every part of yourself. Widowed and single moms also deserve love, companionship and the chance to rebuild their lives without shame.
