Last seen in Dhurandhar playing a character based on NSA Ajit Doval, Madhavan is currently gearing up for the release of GDN, a biography of the Edison of India, GD Naidu. Considering that his role in Dhurandhar and his 2022 directorial, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, were also based on real people, the curiosity behind why Madhavan is increasingly picking these roles cannot be denied.
Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, GDN also stars Dushara Vijayan, Priyamani, Jayaram and Yogi Babu, among others, and is gearing up to open in theatres on August 7 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
In a recent interview, Madhavan issued clarity on doing one biopic after another. “When I chose these projects, I didn’t pick them one after another thinking, ‘I’ll do one biopic after another.’ After Rocketry, I worked on several other films. Similarly, even after Dhurandhar, I’ve completed two or three more projects. It’s just that they’re taking a little longer to be released.”
Additionally, Madhavan also listed the films he has in the pipeline. “We’ve done a web series called Legacy. After that, we made a film called Circle. If those had released first, followed by this film, it would’ve looked different. But this one happened to come out sooner. That’s why it now seems like I’m doing one biopic after another,” he explained.
Vijay Moolan and Varghese Moolan are producing GDN under Varghese Moolan Pictures. Madhavan, too, produces it alongside his wife, Sarita, through their banner, Tricolour Films. Often hailed as the “Edison of India”, GD Naidu was a self-taught engineer and entrepreneur from Coimbatore who revolutionised Indian industry by adapting imported technologies into affordable, practical innovations.
On the technical team, music is composed by 96 and Meiyazhagan fame Govind Vasantha, and cinematography is by Aravind Kamalanathan, who also serves as its creative producer. The film also serves as a reunion of Tricolour Films and Varghese Moolan Pictures following their collaboration on Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.
