Harimau Malaya have secured their place in the semi-finals of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 after defeating the Philippines 1-0 in their final Group B match in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The victory came courtesy of 21-year-old winger Pavithran Gunalan, who scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minutes. Receiving a well-weighted cross from Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal, Pavithran rose to power a header past Philippines goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into celebration, The goal was also Pavithran’s first international goal for Malaysia.
Malaysia controlled much of the match from the midfield, with Wan Kuzain and veteran Sergio Aguero playing key roles in helping the team maintain possession and create opportunities. The Philippines pushed for an equaliser but found Malaysia’s defence difficult to break down, with Ubaidullah Shamsul and Rodney Celvin Akwensivie putting in a strong defensive performance.
Pavithran’s performance earned him the Hyundai Player of the Match award, his second such recognition in the tournament. He now joins Singapore’s Ilhan Fandi as one of the tournament’s two-time award winners.
With the win, Tan Cheng Hoe’s side finished second in Group B with nine points, behind group champions Thailand. Malaysia will now face defending champions Vietnam in the semi-finals, with the first leg set to be played at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium before the return leg in Hanoi.
The semi-final presents a major challenge for Harimau Malaya as they aim to reach the final and chase their second ASEAN title in the tournament’s 30-year history. For Malaysian football fans, Pavithran’s breakthrough performance and the team’s progression into the final four provide plenty of reason to look forward to the next stage of the competition.
