Malaysian squash player U.Thanusaa is setting her sights on her first individual gold medal at the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) after making a strong comeback from a wrist injury.
The 20-year-old Melaka player has been in good form this year, winning four PSA Satellite tournaments following a difficult period that kept her out of action for about a year from the end of 2024.
Thanusaa will compete in her third and final Sukma, which begins on 16th August at the Astaka Courts in Petaling Jaya. After previously finding success in the doubles events, she is now hoping to end her Sukma journey with an individual title.
Four Titles Boost Thanusaa’s Conference
At just 2024 Sukma in Kuching, Thanusaa partnered Goh Jia Xuan to win gold in the women’s doubles. She also secured a silver medal in the mixed doubles alongside Andrik Lim. However, the Selangor Sukma will not feature doubles events. The squash competition will only include men’s and women’s individual and team events.
Thanusaa is expected to enter the women’s individual competition as the top seed, with Kedah’s K.Sehveetrraa among her main challenges. Last month, Thanusaa defeated Sehveetrraa 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-0 in the Singapore Challenger final.
She also named Anrie Goh, Whitney Isabelle Wilson, Doyse Lee and Harleein Tan among the players she expects to provide a strong challenge. Thanusaa has already collected four titles this year at the T-Force Pro Challenger Series 1, Western Australia Open International, UTU Singapore Challenger 6 and Henri Charpentier in Singapore.
After overcoming her wrist injury, the recent results have given her greater confidence towards Sukma. She will also compete in the team event. Together with sisters Goh Zhi Xuan and Goh Jia Xuan, U.Thanusaa will be looking to bring home the women’s team title for Melaka.
