Selangor’s men’s and women’s kabaddi teams are aiming to win two gold medals at the Sukma 2026 after having a strong improvement over the past year.
The team manager V.Ravichandran said both the teams have improved since the Sarawak SUKMA 2024, where they finished as runners-up. Both teams missed out on the title by just one point due to technical aspects of their performances.
Their recent results have given the teams greater confidence heading into this year’s Games. Both men’s and women’s teams won open tournaments in April and May, which also featured international teams. Ravichandran believes these victories have motivated the players to aim higher and contribute towards Selangor’s goal of becoming the overall SUKMA champion.
He also wishes to see kabaddi to be a sport among Malaysians from different. According to him, the popularity is increasing among Malay and Chinese players.
Ravichandran has also met with the Selangor State Education Department (JPN) to discuss on organizing kabaddi courses for students from all communities. He also highlighted the need for a fully equipped training centre to help players develop.
The 22nd SUKMA will take place in Selangor from 15 August to 24th August, with 469 events across 37 sports at 52 venues in 9 districts. Brunei Darussalam will join 15 state contingents as an invited team.
The opening ceremony will be held at Shah Alam Independence Square, while host Selangor has set an overall target of 80 gold medals. Para SUKMA will take place from 5th to 14th September, with 369 events across 10 sports.
