In a significant moment for France’s Hindu community, the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir in Bussy-Saint-Georges, near Paris, is set to open its doors in September, marking the arrival of the country’s first traditionally designed Hindu temple built according to traditional Hindu architectural principles.
The historic opening will be celebrated with a 13-day Festival of Culture from September 2 to 14, 2026, bringing together devotees, members of the Indian diaspora and visitors from around the world. The celebrations will highlight Hindu traditions, spirituality, Indian heritage, music and art.
A New Landmark For Hindu Heritage
The BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir is being established as more than a place of worship. According to BAPS, the temple is designed as a sanctuary of faith, harmony and service, providing a space where Hindu traditions and Indian cultural heritage can be preserved and shared with wider society.
The temple’s traditionally designed stone architecture also adds to its cultural significance. BAPS describes it as France’s first traditionally designed, stone Hindu temple, reflecting centuries-old Hindu architectural traditions in a modern European setting.
Its location in Bussy-Saint-Georges, east of Paris, also places the temple within a growing multicultural community and gives the Hindu diaspora a dedicated space for religious, cultural and community activities.
13 Days Of Culture And Celebration
The inauguration will be marked by the Festival of Culture, running from September 2 to 14.
The 13-day celebration is expected to showcase different aspects of Hindu and Indian culture, including spirituality, music, art and traditional practices. The event is also intended to welcome people beyond the Hindu community, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and greater understanding.
