19-year-old Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M added another international title to his growing career after winning the Kanizsa Open 2026 in Nagykanizsa, Hungary.
Pranesh won the championship after winning agaisnt Germany’s Vadim Petrovskiy in the ninth and final round. Playing with the white pieces, Pranesh entered the final round with the title still on the line and delivered the victory he needed.
Pranesh completed the 9-round tournament with seven points. He shared the highest score with Or Bronstein, Andrei Volokitin and fellow Indian Grandmaster Karthik Venkataraman, but the final standings saw Pranesh as the tournament champion.
Currently rated 2673, Pranesh is ranked 44th in the FIDE World Rankings for August 2026.
Another Milestone for the Young Grandmaster
All the way from Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Pranesh is part of the growing generation of young Indian chess players, who’s making their presence at international tournaments. His latest victory also earned praise from the Indian Embassy in Hungary, which congratulated him on his performance and celebrated another strong result for Indian chess on the global stage.
The embassy highlighted the importance of his final-round victory and noted that Hungary has continued to be a successful destination for Indian chess player.
For Pranesh, the Kanizsa Open title marks another important step in his young career. At just 19, his seven-point campaign and crucial final-round win have added another international achievement to his name while continuing India’s impressive run in world chess.
