The rich tradition of Tamil devotional literature and Thirumurai was celebrated at the 48th National Thirumurai Competition, organised by the Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) at the University of Cyberjaya on Aug 30, 2026
The national-level competition brought together participants from various states, providing a platform for individuals and groups to showcase their knowledge, recitation skills, and appreciation of Thirumurai, an important part of Tamil heritage.
Selangor emerged as the overall state champion, demonstrating strong performances across various categories. Perak secured the first runner-up position, while Penang was named second runner-up.
Several participants also earned Gold Medals for their outstanding performances in their respective categories.
The Gold Medal winners were:
Thirumurai Category 1: Kammira Mayl A/P Absalom – Selangor
Thirumurai Category 2: Maatesh A/L S. Ravichandran – Selangor
Thirumurai Category 3: Shamini A/P Subramani – Perak
Panjapuranum: Nhaamya A/P Vikneswaran – Selangor
Pathiga Parayanam: Gunasegari A/P Kaliappan – Kedah
Speech: Suriyalagan A/L Mathy Yalagan – Selangor
Beyond the individual achievements, the competition featured a wide range of group and individual categories, attracting participants with different levels of experience and backgrounds. Their participation highlighted the growing efforts within the community to ensure that Thirumurai continues to be learned, practised and passed on to future generations.
The annual competition is more than a platform for recognising talent. It also serves as an important avenue for preserving Tamil language, devotional traditions and cultural identity, particularly among younger Malaysians.
The strong participation at this year’s national competition further demonstrates that Thirumurai remains relevant among the younger generation, with children and youths taking an active role in learning and presenting these centuries-old devotional hymns.
Through initiatives such as the National Thirumurai Competition, Malaysia Hindu Sangam continues to provide opportunities for the community to connect with its spiritual and cultural roots while encouraging younger generations to carry the tradition forward.
The 48th edition therefore stands as a celebration not only of achievement, but also of heritage, devotion and the continuity of Tamil culture in Malaysia.
