The Indian community’s ability to preserve it’s language, faith and traditions for generations reflect the multicultural and inclusive nature of Malaysia, said India’s High Commissioner-designate to Malaysia, Somnath Ghosh.
Ghosh, who began his mission in Malaysia on 3rd September, said he was impressed to see how strongly the local Indian community has maintained it’s cultural identity while also being part of Malaysia’s diverse society.
He shared his thoughts after closing the two-day Bandar Maharani Heritage Walk 2026 at SJKT Jalan Khalidi in Muar, Johor, on 6th September.
“I am extremely happy here to see not only our expatriates from India, but people who have been here for six generations. They are maintaining their language, their way of life, their faith,” he said.
Ghosh added that what he saw in Malaysia reminded him of India, where people from different cultures, religious and traditions live alongside one another.
He also recognised the Malaysian Indian community’s role in contributing to the progress, development and well-being of the country.
Exploring Muar’s Multicultural History
The Bandar Maharani Heritage Walk 2026, held on 5th and 6th September was organised by the Malaysia-India Heritage Society (MIHS) together with the Indian High Commission and community-based organisation in Muar. The programme was organised in conjunction with the Visit Johor 2026 campaign.
MIHS Founder-President Prabhakaran Nair said the heritage walk aimed to explore and document Muar’s multicultural history, including the contributions made by different communities towards the town’s development.
It also highlighted the shared historical and cultural connections between Malaysia and India.
More than 60 participants joined the two-day programme and explore several places connected to Muar’s history and communities. Among the stops were Muar River Cruise at Tanjung Emas, Chiang Chuan Association Building, Muar Nagara Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, Gurdwara Sahib Muar, and the Muar Indian Association.
Participants also visited other important heritage locations and took part in talks, lecturers, and exchange about Muar’s history and cultural heritage.
Two Books Celebrating Muar Launched
Another major highlight of the programme was the launch of two books focusing on the people and heritage of Muar.
The first, A Life Reimagined, is the memoir of Kalsom Taib, while Of Roots and Wings by Lilian Low tells the stories of successful individuals connected to Muar.
Through the heritage walk, participants were given a closer look at the different communities that have shaped Muar over the years, while also celebrating the cultural ties that continue to connect Malaysia and India.
