A Hindu cemetery in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, was among the areas affected by a landslide following several hours of heavy rain on September 9, 2026. It is reported that the parts of the cemetery sustaining damage from the strong flow of water and debris.

The landslide caused significant damage to the cemetery’s perimeter wall, gates and a small prayer structure while a workshop within the cemetery was also destroyed. Part of the nearby riverbank was washed away, raising concerns over further erosion and the safety of the cemetery if heavy rainfall continues.

The incident occurred near Kampung Sungai Ubi at around 1 am after the area recorded approximately 59mm of rainfall. Soil, debris, and tree trunks were swept down by the landslide, affecting both the cemetery and the surrounding community.

The cemetery is located close to a river, making it particularly vulnerable to erosion during periods of heavy rain. The damage has affected not only the physical structures within the cemetery but also an important space used by the Hindu community to honour and remember their loved ones.

The landslide also affected the nearby Orang Asli community, with debris blocking access to the village. A vehicle and community hall were reportedly affected, while authorities began efforts to clear the road and assess the extent of the damage.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and carry out clean-up efforts following the incident. The damage to the Hindu cemetery also highlights the importance of protecting community burial grounds from natural hazards, particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides and riverbank erosion.
