In the past few days, 1980s fashion has been trending on social media. Everyone from standard social media users to celebrities, including film personalities, has hopped on the bandwagon by sharing AI-generated pictures of themselves decked in 80s-style clothing. The latest to catch on to the trend is Shah Rukh Khan’s production banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

On Thursday, the producer shared stills from the songs in Shah Rukh’s 2007 film Om Shanti Om, directed by Farah Khan and co-starring Deepika Padukone in her Hindi debut. Referring to a 1980s retro trend, the production house wrote, “Who needs AI when you have Farah Khan!”

The film follows an arrogant, successful actor (Shah Rukh) who gradually realises he is the reincarnation of a junior actor. The realisation makes him want to avenge the murder of his old lover, a superstar and a darling of the masses, played by Deepika Padukone. As part of his plan, he hires a look-alike of his lover, who is also a massive admirer of him as a star.

Om Shanti Om became a big blockbuster at the time of its release and reportedly earned 150 crore at the global box office. The film is best remembered for its comedic stretches, spoofing old Hindi cinema sensibilities, its colourfully choreographed songs, and performances by Shah Rukh, Deepika, and Arjun Rampal, among others. The song ‘Deewangi Deewangi,’ in particular, earned much appreciation for how it assembled about 30 stars in Hindi cinema.

From a fashion point of view, much of Om Shanti Om is set in the late 1970s, not the following decade. This means it revived and paid homage to 1970s retro fashion in Hindi cinema. It has costumes designed by Manish Malhotra, Karan Johar, and Sanjeev Mulchandani.
