The wait is finally over as Karthi steps back into the world of spies with Sardar 2, the sequel to the 2022 hit Sardar.

Directed by P.S. Mithran, Sardar 2 brings Karthi back in his dual roles as Chandra Bose (Agent Sardar) and his son Vijay Prakash (Viji). This time, he is joined by S.J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, Yogi Babu, Rajisha Vijayan, Nizhalgal Ravi, and several others, with Sam C.S. composing the music.

The first Sardar gave us a spy thriller that stood out of it’s unique storyline, action, and the complicated relationship between a father and a son. Naturally expectations were high when a sequel was announced.

Sardar 2 takes us on another mission, this time with a new threat, a new villain, and another chapter connected to Sardar’s past. With plenty of action, twists, comedy and familiar faces, the sequel has all the ingredients of the Sardar world we enjoyed the first time.

So, after watching Sardar 2, here are 5 things that stood out to us

1) Two Roles, One Karthi, and He Delivers

If there is one person who holds Sardar 2 together from beginning to end, it is Karthi. Once again playing both as Sardar and Viji, Karthi manages to make the two characters feel completely different despite sharing the same face.

As Sardar, he carries himself with confidence and a experience of a man who has spent years as a spy. Viji, meanwhile, brings a younger and more emotional energy to the story.

We already know how well Karthi fits into roles involving police officers, investigations, and actions. Sardar 2 plays to those strengths, from his body language to his dialogue delivery and action sequences, he makes both characters enjoyable to watch.

The film also gives him several transformations and disguise, reminding us of one of the most entertaining elements from the first film. Whenever Karthi switches into full Sardar mode, the film immediately feels more alive.

2) A Familiar Sardar with a Bigger Mission

If you watched and loved the previous Sardar, there are several things about the sequel that will immediately feel familiar.

There is a different mission, another connection to Sardar’s past, a new enemy, and a much bigger threat to stop. While the story itself is different, the way the mystery slowly unfolds carries the same flavour as the first film.

This time, the central conflict involves a dangerous biological threat, while the story also touches on subjects around medicine and antibiotic. These ideas give the spy thriller a larger issue to explore beyond it’s action sequences.

And because this is Sardar, you cannot expect everything to be straightforward.

There are plenty of twist, secrets and connections between characters, so the film definitely keeps you thinking. The first half builds this world well and leaves you curious about what is coming next.

The second half takes more time to connect all of it’s pieces, which can make certain portions feel slower. Still, the different layers of the mission keep the story moving forward it’s larger reveal.

3) Sam C.S Gives the Action Sequence an Extra Punch

A spy thriller needs it’s action, but the right background score can completely change how those scenes feel.

Sam C.S understands that assignment in Sardar 2.

His background music works well especially during Karthi’s mass scenes and some of the film’s larger action sequences. There are moments when the music kicks in at exactly the right time and gives you that goosebumps moment inside the theater.

The action itself is also one of the film’s strengths. Sardar 2 expands the scale of the first film with the mission moving to different locations and giving Karthi many opportunities to step into action-hero mode.

Some sequences are stylish, some are intense, and together with Sam C.S’s score, they bring a good amount of energy to the film.

For those who enjoyed the action side of the first Sardar, the sequel gives you more of it.

4) More Characters, More Comedy and A New Villain

Compared to the first film, Sardar 2 brings more humour into it’s spy world.

Yogi Babu and Nizhalgal Ravi provides a few lighter moments, giving audiences a break from all the secrets, missions, and serious conversations happening around them. The comedy does not feel like it is trying too hard to take over the story either. Instead it comes in between the heavier portions of the film and manages to get some genuine laughs.

Then there is SJ Suryah as Yogi.

We all know SJ Suryah is a strong performer, and once again, he brings his own personality and screen presence to the role. His expressions, dialogue delivery and energy make Yogi interesting whenever he appears on screen.

However, considering that Yogi is the main villain, the character feels like it could have been taken further. SJ Suryah does what he can with the role but Yogi never quite gives you the chilling feeling you would expect from a villain in a large-scale spy thriller. There were opportunities to make him more threatening and unpredictable, especially when he is going up against a character like Sardar.

The supporting cast also adds plenty to the film. Malavika Mohanan gets her share of action as RAW agent Zara, while Ashika Ranganath plays her part in moving the story forward.

5) Plenty of Twists, but the Runtime Can Be Felt

At almost 3 hours, Sardar 2 certainly takes it’s time with this mission. The first half moves quite smoothly as we are introduced to the characters, the new threat, and the different pieces of the story. With several questions waiting to be answered, there is enough happening to keep you curious.

The second half, however, feels slightly slow.

There are a few twists and explanations to unpack, and because the film has many characters and storylines to connect, some portions take longer.

For a spy thriller, having layers and twists is part of the fun, and Sardar 2 certainly gives audiences a lot to think about. However, trimming down a few portions could have made the second half feel righter and allowed bigger moments to have more impact.

Another Sardar Mission Worth Experiencing

Overall, Sardar 2 is an entertaining film to catch on the big screen, especially if you enjoy action, spy thrillers and Karthi in full action mode. With plenty of twists, comedy, and larger than life moments, it is the kind of film you can enjoy with your friends and family over the weekend.
