What started as a Tamil thriller about a barber and his missing dustbin is now making its way to Hollywood.
Vijay Sethupathi’s 2024 blockbuster Maharaja is officially being developed as a Hollywood remake, marking a major international milestone for the Tamil film industry. The development comes after the film gained attention beyond India, particularly following its successful run in China and strong reach on OTT platforms.
According to producer Sudhan Sundaram, the makers were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights following the film’s reach in China. The agency is now working to set up the English-language version with a well-known actor, with production potentially beginning next year.
Matthew McConaughey’s Name Enters The Conversation
While the Hollywood lead has yet to be officially announced, Oscar- winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been linked to the project.
Speaking about the speculation, Sundaram indicated that McConaughey could be among the actors being considered for the role originally played by Vijay Sethupathi. However, he stressed that the Hollywood agency handling the project would have to officially confirm the casting.

This means that while McConaughey’s name has certainly added excitement around the remake, his involvement should not yet be treated as confirmed.
From A Missing Dustbin To A Much Darker Mystery
Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows Vijay Sethupathi as a barber who approaches the police after his prized dustbin goes missing. What initially appears to be a rather unusual complaint gradually unfolds into a much darker crime story, with the film using a non-linear narrative and a series of twists to reveal what is really happening.
The film also featured Anurag Kashyap in a key negative role, alongside Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam and Sanchana Namidass. The film went on to receive widespread attention for its performances and storytelling.
A Tamil Story Finds A Global Audience
Maharaja’s journey did not end with its Tamil theatrical release. The film reportedly earned around ₹91.65 crore in China, while its availability on streaming platforms helped it reach audiences internationally. According to the producer, this international response played a role in attracting Hollywood interest.
With the Hollywood remake now in development, Maharaja is set to take its story to a completely new audience. Whether McConaughey eventually steps into Vijay Sethupathi’s shoes remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear, this Tamil thriller has travelled far beyond its original home.
