Thevendran Kaliana Sundram has delivered a proud start for Malaysia at the 2026 Asian Games, securing the nation’s first medal in karate on the opening day of competition in Nagoya, Japan.
The 2026 Asian Games, which officially began on September 19 and will run until October 4, saw Thevendran make his mark in the Men’s Individual Kumite -55kg category. The Malaysian karate exponent put up a strong performance in the bronze medal bout, defeating Nepal’s Rakesh Manandhar 9-1 to claim the bronze medal and open Malaysia’s medal account at the Games.
Adding to Malaysia’s early success, Sureeya Shankar Hari Shankar also secured a bronze medal in the Men’s Individual Kumite -60kg category. His achievement gave Malaysia its second medal of the Games, with both karate athletes contributing to a strong opening for the national contingent.
Behind the athletes’ achievements is their coach Sharmendran, who has consistently stood by the karate team throughout their journey.
