MAMEE has taken steps to withdraw a Selangor-themed bag featuring an AI-generated illustration of Lord Murugan at Batu Caves after the artwork drew concerns over the inaccurate depiction of the Hindu deity’s sacred weapon.
The issues has since led to an apology from MAMEE and a meeting with the Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS), where the company addressed concerns raised by the Hindu community and discussed the withdrawal of the affected product.
AI Artwork Draws Concerns Over Lord Murugan Depiction
The packaging featured an AI-generated illustration of Lord Murugan, but the weapon depicted in the artwork appeared as a three-pronged trident instead of the traditional vel, the sacred spear closely associated with Lord Murugan.
The inaccurate representation raised concerns over the importance of cultural and religious sensitiviy, particularly when sacred figures and symbols are used in commercial products.
MAMEE Apologises And Begins Product Withdrawal
Following the concerns, MAMEE apologised to the Hindu community and acknowledged that greater care should have been taken when creating and reviewing the artwork.
The company said the intention behind the design was to celebrate Malaysia’s cultural and religious diversity and that there was no intention to cause offence. MAMEE also began recalling the affected bags from its retail and distribution channels.
The company further acknowledged that religious symbols and places of worship hold deep spiritual, cultural and emotional significance, highlighting the need for greater sensitivity when representing them.
MAMEE Meets Malaysia Hindu Sangam
Following the issue, the MAMEE management team visited the Malaysia Hindu Sangam’s National President, together with Central Council members, to formally extend its apologies to the Hindu community nationwide.
The delegation was led by MAMEE Chief Executive Officer Pierre Pang, Chief Operating Officer Varun, and Chief Marketing Officer Yuan Yi. During the meeting, the National President received MAMEE’s formal letter of apology and conveyed the concerns of the Hindu community to the company’s management.

MHS Requests Product Withdrawal And Future Consultation
MHS also requested MAMEE management to withdraw the relevant product from the market and to coordinate with the organisation on any future marketing initiatives involving the Hindu community.
The request aims to ensure that future campaigns involving Hindu religious figures, symbols or cultural elements are developed with appropriate cultural and religious sensitivity. MHS said it appreciates MAMEE management’s engagement and willingness to address the matter responsibly.
A Reminder On The Use Of AI In Cultural Representation
The incident also highlights the importance of human oversight when using AI-generated visuals, particularly for religious and culturally significant subjects.
While AI tools can produce artwork quickly, generated images may contain inaccuracies in important cultural or religious details. Proper review and consultation can therefore help ensure that such representations are accurate and respectful.
MAMEE’s recall and engagement with MHS now mark the company’s response to the concerns raised by the Hindu community, while the discussion also serves as a reminder for brands to exercise greater care when incorporating religious and cultural imagery into their marketing materials.
