Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri R. Ramanan has made history as the first person from the Malaysian Indian community to receive the Darjah Kebesaran Jiwa Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Mulia (SJMK) honour.
The prestigious state honour was conferred by Sultan Muhammad V during the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with His Royal Highness’s 57th birthday celebrations at Istana Balai Besar, Kota Bharu, on September 29, 2026. Ramanan also headed the list of 767 recipients who received various state honours and medals during the ceremony.
The SJMK carries the title Dato’, with its membership limited to 50 recipients. While Ramanan already holds a Dato’ Sri title, the significance of this conferment lies in its historical distinction as the first SJMK awarded to a person from the Indian community since the order was established.
Following the conferment, Ramanan expressed his gratitude to Sultan Muhammad V, describing the honour as both a recognition and a responsibility to further strengthen his service and contributions to the Ruler, the people and the country.
The historic recognition comes as Ramanan continues his work as Human Resources Minister, including initiatives aimed at strengthening opportunities for the Malaysian Indian community. Earlier this month, MITRA announced seven new initiatives worth RM59.76 million under his leadership, expected to benefit more than 20,000 recipients and around 600 institutions nationwide.
Ramanan’s conferment of the SJMK marks a significant moment for the Malaysian Indian community, adding a new chapter to the history of Kelantan’s state honours system while recognising his continued role in public service.
