Malaysian Tamil cinema is preparing for an exciting milestone as Irumbuth Thottam, is set to become the first Malaysian Tamil feature film to receive a public cinema release in Australia.
Directed by Jaydev Jayakumar and produced by AVLT Production, the crime investigation drama will make its Australian theatrical debut in October 2026, with the release presented by the Melbourne Malaysian Indian Cultural Club (MMICC).
Although Malaysian films have previously reached Australian audiences through film festivals, Irumbuth Thottam marks a new step for Malaysian Tamil cinema by bringing a locally produced film to Australian cinemas for a public theatrical release.
A Malaysian Crime Thriller Heads Overseas
Irumbuth Thottam released in Malaysian cinemas on 6th August 2026. The film follows police officers Rahim and Easwaran as they investigate the disappearance and suspected murder of a 15-year-old student.
As the investigation continues, a respected teacher becomes a kye suspect and the officers begin uncovering secrets hidden within the community. Beyond the crime mystery, the film explores sensitive social issues, including teenage pregnancy, the pressure of social expectations, and many more.
The film stars Irfan Zaini, and Logavarman Strideran as the investigating officers, alongside Marie Dashani Matthews, Geethanjali G, Mohana Raj, Dhurgaashini S.Vijvan, Balan Kash and Vino Shan, among others.
Written and directed by Jaydev Jayakumar, the film uses its crime investigation story to encourage conversations about issues that are often left unspoken in society.
A New Opportunity for Malaysian Tamil Cinema
The upcoming Australian release is an important moment for Irumbuth Thottam and the wider Malaysian Tamil film industry. The film completed its theatrical run and has collected RM 238,876.
With MMICC presenting the film in Australia, the release will give Malaysian Tamil cinema an opportunity to reach audiences beyond its home market through regular cinema screenings.
The film’s journey to another country shows the growing efforts of homegrown film makers to bring Malaysian stories to international audiences. Irumbuth Thottam is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas in October 2026.
