Indian pilot Smit Machchhar, a veteran Boeing 737 captain, is receiving widespread attention after saving passengers while sustaining injuries during a serious cockpit incident aboard a FlyDubai flight on September 30, 2026.
Smit Machchhar was the captain of FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, which departed from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board. During the flight, he was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot, causing the aircraft to rapidly lose altitude. The exact circumstances and motives behind the confrontation are still under investigation.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Smit Machchhar managed to activate the cockpit door release, allowing crew members and passengers to enter the cockpit and restrain the attacker. Two other FlyDubai pilots, who were traveling as passengers, then assisted in controlling the aircraft, which was diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

From Mumbai to the Cockpit
Smit Machchhar, originally from Mumbai, began his commercial aviation career with SpiceJet in 2011, spending around 11 years with the Indian airline. He then joined FlyDubai in 2022 as a captain.
His professional profile includes experience flying the Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8/9, with approximately 9,750 total flying hours, including over 6,400 hours as Pilot-in-Command.
A Captain Under Extreme Pressure
The incident tested Smit Machchhar’s experience and training in extraordinary ways. It is stated that the aircraft dropped approximately 14,000 feet in lessthan 30 seconds during the confrontation before the situation was brought under control.

His decision to open the cockpit door became a crucial moment in the emergency, enabling others to intervene and assisting the flight crew in regaining control of the situation. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Saudi Arabia, where Smit Machchhar and the other pilot received medical treatment.
As of October 1, 2026, Smit Machchhar was reported to have undergone surgery and was in stable condition, with Indian diplomatic officials monitoring his treatment and remaining in contact with his family.
