The relocation of Sri Muniswarar Temple at Hoch Eng Estate, Tasek Gelugor, Penang, has reached another significant milestone with a Boomi Poojai ceremony held at its proposed new site on 13 September 2026.
The ceremony was attended by Dato’ Sundarajoo Somu, who has been involved in efforts to address the temple’s relocation since the issues was brought to his attention in 2024.
Relocation Efforts Began in 2024
Dato’ Sundarajoo stated that the issue concerning the relocation of the temple was first brought to his attention in 2024. Following this, he engaged with the relevant authorities to examine the matter and explore possible solutions that would take into account the needs and interests of all parties, particularly the temple community.

As part of these efforts, a discussion was held on 7 April 2025 involving property developer GSD Land and representatives of the temple committee.
The discussion focused on the proposed relocation arrangements and the necessary steps to ensure that the process was carried out in an organised manner, while considering the views and requirements of the devotees.
Proposed New Temple Site Assessed in September 2025
The relocation efforts continued on 26 September 2025, when Dato’ Sundarajoo conducted a working visit to the proposed new site together with representatives from GSD Land and the temple committee.

The visit provided an opportunity for all parties to assess the progress of the proposed site and discuss matters relating to the relocation in greater detail. The engagement was part of the ongoing efforts to ensure that the new location would accommodate the temple community’s needs as the relocation process moved forward.
Boomi Poojai Marks Another Milestone
The latest development took place on 13 September 2026, when Dato’ Sundarajoo attended the Boomi Poojai ceremony at the proposed new site of Sri Muniswarar Temple.
Dato’ Sundarajoo highlighted that the preservation of religious institutions and traditional heritage remains a shared responsibility, emphasising the importance of cooperation and constructive discussions among all parties involved. He also expressed his appreciation to GSD Land, the temple committee and everyone who contributed to the relocation efforts and the organisation of the ceremony.

Continued Monitoring of Relocation Process
Dato’ Sundarajoo said he would continue monitoring the relocation arrangements alongside the relevant parties, with the hope that every step would be carried out carefully and responsibly.
He added that the temple represents more than just a physical building, as it provides devotees with a space to practise their faith, uphold religious traditions and maintain spiritual and family connections.

While the Boomi Poojai marks a significant development, further progress on the temple’s relocation and construction arrangements remains important to ensure the community can continue its religious practices at the new site.
