A video of a woman running 1,600 metres barefoot and dressed in a saree has gone viral, drawing praise from social media users who were inspired by her determination and remarkable endurance.
But behind the six-minute run is a mother’s sacrifice and a dream to build a more secure future for her children.
The woman, identified as Kavita Kumari from Soso village in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, India, is preparing for the state’s Home Guard recruitment. As part of the selection process, female candidates are required to complete a 1,600-metre run within 10 minutes.
Despite not having proper running shoes or sportswear, Kavita completed the distance in just six minutes during a trial, comfortably meeting the required time.
What caught people’s attention was not only her speed, but the circumstances in which she trained. Kavita reportedly often runs barefoot and practises in her everyday saree because she cannot afford proper sports equipment.
A widow and mother of two young children, Kavita also helps support her elderly in-laws. With limited financial resources, securing a Home Guard position could provide her family with much-needed financial stability.
The video of her run later spread across social media, with many praising her strength and determination. Her story also caught the attention of a local running group, who visited her home and honoured her following the viral attention.
The Home Guard recruitment in Ramgarh offers 284 positions, with 50 per cent reserved for women and an additional five per cent reservation for widows and divorced women.
For Kavita, the run is about much more than completing 1,600 metres. It is a chance to secure a stable income, support her family and give her children opportunities she may not have had herself.
While many saw a woman running barefoot in a saree, behind that viral moment was a mother running towards something much bigger, a better and more secure future for her children.
