More than 73,000 six-year-old children have registered to enter Year One in 2027, as Malaysia prepares to introduce an optional early-entry pathway for younger pupils.
According to Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, 73,498 six-year-olds had registered for Year One as of September 30, 2026. They will join 418,151 seven-year-olds who have also registered, bringing the total number of Year One registrations for the 2027 academic session to 491,649 pupils.

The new arrangement allows parents to decide whether their six-year-old child is ready to begin primary education one year earlier. The option will take effect from the 2027 academic calendar, while the seven-year-old intake will remain the main pathway during the transition period.
The Education Ministry has stressed that the decision is based on parental choice, with parents considered best placed to assess their children’s readiness for primary school.
The introduction of the additional cohort means schools have had to prepare for a larger Year One intake. The ministry initially planned 2,596 additional classrooms at 838 schools, but has since adjusted its plans based on the latest registration figures.

At present, 677 classroom projects involving 1,478 new classrooms at 605 schools are being carried out. Another 1,514 upgrading projects will convert existing special-purpose rooms into classrooms to further increase capacity.
Teacher availability is also being addressed, with 3,150 Contract of Service teachers approved to meet the needs of the two Year One cohorts. Those who pass the required health screening are expected to receive their offer letters this month, with appointments scheduled to take effect on December 7, 2026.
The ministry said registration trends have remained consistent over the past three months and does not expect a sudden surge in six-year-old registrations before the 2027 school session. However, it will continue monitoring registration figures and school readiness across the states and districts.
