Recently deceased, Singeetham Sreenivasa Rao was an iconic Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, music composer, and actor. He was widely regarded as one of the most versatile and pioneering visionaries in Indian cinema, as he developed a legendary career spanning over five decades, primarily working across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films. In Tamil, he was the man behind some of Kamal Haasan’s famous classics. Here are 5 films to remember the iconic combination of the trio consisting of Kamal Haasan, Singeetham and Crazy Mohan that will always remain quintessential.

Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990)

Directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and written by Kamal Haasan, Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990) is a classic Tamil comedy film centred on four identical quadruplets separated at birth whose lives descend into a hilarious chain of mistaken identities when they cross paths in Bangalore. Featuring Ulaganayagan in a brilliant quadruple role alongside an iconic supporting cast, the film remains celebrated as a landmark masterclass in farce, slapstick humour, and intricate screenplay writing in Indian cinema.

Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989)

Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989) stands as a landmark Tamil film about twin brothers separated at birth, Raja, a carefree mechanic, and Appu, a dwarf circus clown. The film features Kamal Haasan in a celebrated dual role (notably portraying the unforgettable Appu); it follows their emotional reunion and Appu’s meticulously planned, inventive crusade for vengeance against the corrupt gangsters who murdered their honest police officer father. Powered by Ilaiyaraaja’s hit music, sharp dialogue by Crazy Mohan, and groundbreaking visual execution, it remains an all-time classic of Indian cinema.

Kaathala Kaathala (1998)

Kaathala Kaathala (1998) is a Tamil romantic-comedy film starring Kamal Haasan and Prabhu Deva as two orphan friends named Ramalingam and Sundaralingam. The film follows the chaotic chain of hilarious errors they create when they fall in love with two women (played by Soundarya and Rambha) and resort to an escalating web of elaborate lies, disguises, and false identities to impress their prospective fathers-in-law. Highlighted by stellar slapstick performances from an ensemble supporting cast including Vadivelu and music composed by Karthik Raja, it remains a beloved and fast-paced farce of errors in Tamil cinema.

Magalir Mattum (1994)

Directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, produced by Kamal Haasan, and written by Crazy Mohan, Magalir Mattum (1994) is a Tamil satirical comedy-drama film starring Revathi, Urvashi, and Rohini as three working women who decide to take matters into their own hands and teach a lesson to their lecherous, abusive office manager (played by Nassar). Powered by Ilaiyaraaja’s music, the film brilliantly blends sharp social commentary on workplace harassment with hilarious black comedy as the trio accidentally finds themselves entangled in a chaotic chain of events involving a terrorist’s dead body.

Mumbai Express (2005)

Directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and produced by Kamal Haasan, Mumbai Express (2005) is a crime black-comedy film starring Haasan as Avinasi (Avinash), a deaf stunt biker who gets roped into a botched ransom plot by a trio of small-time crooks. The chaotic plan takes an unexpected turn when they accidentally kidnap the wrong child—who turns out to be the illegitimate son of a police officer—setting off a hilarious chain of mix-ups involving the boy’s parents and an eccentric supporting cast. Shot simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, the film is historically notable as India’s first major feature film to be entirely shot and censored in a digital format.

Whether it is blending laugh-out-loud farce with an emotional core or pushing the boundaries of social satire, the legendary camaraderie between Singeetham Sreenivasa Rao, Kamal Haasan, and Crazy Mohan redefined the boundaries of Tamil cinema. These cinematic gems will always remain as timeless testaments to an extraordinary creative legacy, ensuring that Singeetham’s visionary genius and storytelling brilliance will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and audiences to come.
