Malaysian chess player R. Yoshni has made the nation proud after winning gold in the individual classical chess event at the Asia-Pacific Deaf Multi-Sport Championships 2026, marking an impressive achievement in her international debut.
At just 13 years old, Yoshni secured the gold medal despite competing on an international stage for the first time. Yoshni stated that she had never imagine standing on the highest step of the podium when she first represented Malaysia at the championship.
Overcoming Challenges To Claim Gold
Yoshni’s achievement was made even more significant by her success in overcoming competition with India to secure the gold medal. The young chess player credited the guidance and knowledge passed down by her elder brother for helping her prepare for the tournament and perform throughout the competition.

She expressed pride in the achievement, acknowledging the important role her brother played in developing her skills and preparing her to face international opponents. Her victory highlights the potential of young Malaysian athletes in deaf sports, demonstrating that age does not have to be a barrier to competing and achieving succes at the international level.
Aiming For Greater Achievements
Despite her remarkable debut, Yoshni remains determined to continue improving rather than resting on her success. She views the championship as a valuable learning experience that will help her refine her playing style, gain experience and mature as a chess player.

Recognising that she still has a long journey ahead, Yoshni hopes to strengthen her abilities and prepare herself for greater challenges in future competitions.
Her gold medal is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Malaysia’s deaf sports community. With more opportunities to develop her talent, the young chess player has the potential to achieve further succes on the international stage.
