Deepavali is just around the corner! While many of us are looking forward to balik kampung, spending time with family, making murukku and playing with firecrackers, not everyone has big plans for the celebration. Some may be unable to return home, while others might simply want to take a break from the usual festive routine or you’re celebrating this year in KL with your cousins. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the occasion!
If you’re wondering what to do for Deepavali, here are 6 ways to make the holiday a little more fun:
1) Have a Movie Night (With a Little Horror or Thriller!)
Watching a movie might sound like something you can do any other day, but when was the last time you watched one with your entire family? Whether you’re heading to the cinema or staying home, gather your cousins, siblings or parents for a movie night.

Here’s a little tip from personal experience: pick a thriller or horror film! There’s nothing quite like watching a scary movie with your cousins. One person screams, another starts laughing and before you know it, the whole room is in chaos. It’s definitely a fun way to spend the evening!
2) Bring Back the Games We Grew Up Playing
Remember playing congkak, batu seremban, pick-up sticks or even Old Maid cards? These are some of the games we enjoyed growing up but hardly play anymore.

This Deepavali, bring them out again and challenge your cousins, siblings or friends to a few rounds. Better yet, get your parents involved too! You might be surprised by how competitive everyone gets.
3) Skip the Cooking and Enjoy a Deepavali Feast Outside
We all love a good home-cooked Deepavali meal, but preparing a festive feast can take a lot of time and effort. So, why not give the kitchen a break this year and take your family out for a nice meal?

Several hotels and restaurants offer special Deepavali buffets and festive menus during the season. It’s also a great option for those who can’t balik kampung but still want to enjoy the familiar flavours of home. Just remember to check the dates and book a table early!
4) Plan a Little Deepavali Outing
Who says Deepavali has to be spent entirely at home? If you have no plans for the day, gather your family or friends and head out for a little festive adventure.

You could explore shopping malls decorated specially for Deepavali or simply spend the day shopping and cafe hopping. Sometimes, a simple outing is all you need to make the holiday enjoyable.
5) Turn Up the Music for a Karaoke and Dance Night
If there’s one thing that can bring everyone together, it’s music! Put together a playlist of your favorite Tamil songs, from old-school classics to the latest hits, and turn your living room into a mini karaoke session.

Get your cousins, siblings, and even your parents to join in. Sing your hearts out, show off your dance moves and don’t worry about getting the lyrics right. After all, the fun is in enjoying the moments together!
6) Share a Little Festive Kindness
Deepavali is also a lovely time to spread some joy beyond our own celebrations. If you know someone who might be spending the holiday alone, why not invite them over or drop by for a visit?

You could also share festive sweets with your neighbours, prepare a little meal for someone or spend some time giving back to the community. Even the smallest gesture can make someone’s celebration a little brighter.
Make This Deepavali Your Own
At the end of the day, there’s no single way to celebrate Deepavali. Whether you’re spending it with family, catching up with friends or enjoying some time on your own, what matters most is making the day meaningful in your own way.
So if you haven’t made any plans for 8th November, perhaps it’s time to try something else this year. Who knows? You might even start a new Deepavali tradition!
