In the spirit of Deepavali, the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has launched a food basket distribution initiative to bring festive cheer to 22,000 Malaysian Indian families in need across the country.
The initiative was announced by Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, who officiated the launch of the Deepavali 2026 Food Basked Contribution Ceremony in Batu Caves. The programme aimes to ease the financial burden of families by providing essential household items ahead of the festival.
Bringing Festive Relief to Families in Need
The initiative reflects the MADANI Government’s commitment to ensuring that families from the Indian community, particularly those facing financial difficulties, can celebrate Deepavali with greater peace of mind.
With the rising expenses associated with festive preparations, the distribution of essential food items is intended to help ease household spending and ensure that more families can enjoy the celebrations without being left behind.
A Collective Effort to Spread Deepavali Cheer
KESUMA, together with its participating agencies and volunteers, will coordinate the distribution to ensure the contributions reach eligible families across Malaysia.
Dato’ Sri Ramanan highlighted that the true meaning of Deepavali goes beyond festive celebrations, emphasising the importance of extending happiness and support to those in need. While assistance may not resolve every hardship, he noted that even a small contribution can provide relief and bring smiles to families.
The initiative serves as a reminder that the spirit of Deepavali lies in compassion, generosity, and shared happiness, ensuring that more families can welcome the Festival of Lights with hope and gratitude.
