Dr Vinesha Selvarajah has been recognised as ASEAN’s Top Woman in Security, marking a significant achievement in her career and placing her among the region’s outstanding women in the security profession.
Currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Cyber Security and Forensics at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), Dr Vinesha received both the Top Woman in Security (Malaysia) and Top Woman in Security (ASEAN) Region recognitions.
The awards celebrate her contributions to cybersecurity education, industry development, leadership and her commitment to encouraging greater female participation in the traditionally male-dominated field.
From APU Student to Award-Winning Academic
Dr Vinesha’s journey in cybersecurity began at APU, where she pursued her early higher education before continuing her academic journey at Kyushu University in Japan and completing her PhD at Monash University.

Today, she has returned to APU as an academic, where she contributes to cybersecurity education and helps develop programmes that equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the industry. Her journey highlights how education and continuous learning can open doors to opportunities beyond the classroom.
Recognised for Contributions to the Cybersecurity Industry
Beyond her academic responsibilities, Dr Vinesha has been actively involved in strengthening the cybersecurity talent pipeline through industry collaborations, professional certifications and practical learning opportunities.

She works towards connecting students with industry professionals, government agencies and relevant organisations to provide greater exposure to real-world cybersecurity challenges.
Her contributions aim to ensure that graduates are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the practical skills needed to navigate an increasingly digital world.
Creating More Opportunities for Women in Cybersecurity
One of the significant aspects of Dr Vinesha’s work is her commitment to encouraging more women and girls to explore careers in cybersecurity. She played a role in establishing ASIGWISE, a community that supports women through mentorship, confidence-building initiatives and greater exposure to the cybersecurity industry.
Through these efforts, she hopes to create an environment where women have access to the guidance, opportunities and support needed to pursue careers in technology and security. Her work reflects the importance of representation and mentorship in helping more women find their place in industries where they remain underrepresented.

A Regional Achievement That Inspires Future Generations
Dr Vinesha was among four Malaysian nominees selected from a group of 12 finalists before emerging as the ASEAN regional winner.
The recognition is part of the Top Women in Security initiative, which celebrates women’s contributions to the security profession across the region.
She is expected to attend the official award ceremony in Singapore in February 2027. Reflecting on her journey, Dr Vinesha shared that her goal was never simply to secure a place for herself in the industry, but to create more opportunities for others to follow.
Her achievement serves as an encouraging example for young Malaysians, particularly women who aspire to pursue careers in cybersecurity, technology and other fields where greater female representation is needed.
