It’s that time of the year again! The usual horror picks have come around, but Tamil cinema has its own chilling template that deserves a spot on your watchlist. Dark mansions, restless spirits, haunted flats, and a pizza delivery gone wrong have all given Kollywood some of its most memorable scares, often with a twist, a touch of humour, or a psychological spin. Whether you grew up hiding behind a cushion during Chandramukhi or are looking for a fresh fright this season, here are the Tamil horror films that still send a shiver down the spine.

Chandramukhi (2005)

The unmissable classic. Senthil and his wife Ganga move into an ancestral mansion, ignoring warnings to keep one room locked. Strange events follow, and the family fears the ghost of Chandramukhi, a dancer murdered centuries ago by the cruel king Vettaiyan after she fell for another man. Psychiatrist Dr. Saravanan, a skeptic, investigates and realises Ganga, burdened by her own buried trauma, is developing a dissociative personality modelled on Chandramukhi. Through hypnotherapy, he stages a ritual in which he plays Vettaiyan, letting Chandramukhi’s story reach its end. The persona dissolves, and Ganga recovers. Rajinikanth’s turn made this 2005 P. Vasu film a blockbuster.

Yaavarum Nalam (2013)

Another Halloween banger that has us all forever traumatised. Manohar, an IT professional played by R. Madhavan, moves his family into a new apartment, flat 13B, in a high-rise. Soon after, a mysterious television serial begins airing, and its events eerily mirror what happens in their own lives. As the serial predicts accidents and tragedies before they occur, the family realises something sinister is controlling their fate. Manohar races to understand the connection between the broadcast and the apartment, and to break its hold before his loved ones are lost. Vikram K. Kumar’s 2009 film was made simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, the latter titled 13B, and is a suspenseful supernatural thriller.

Darling (2015)

The unforgettable acting debut of G. V. Prakash. Kathir, an easygoing young man, falls for Nisha, and his love story soon runs into trouble. When he and his friends spend time in a secluded house, strange occurrences begin, and the woman he loves starts behaving unnaturally, seemingly possessed by a vengeful spirit. What follows is a mix of scares and slapstick, as his bumbling friends, played for laughs by comedians like Bala Saravanan and Karunas, try to help him uncover the spirit’s past. Kathir must confront the haunting to save the person he loves. Sam Anton’s 2015 horror-comedy remakes the Telugu hit Prema Katha Chitram.

Maya (2015)

Vasanth is a struggling filmmaker who needs a hit script. Meanwhile, Apsara, a single mother, lives with her young daughter in a flat and is struggling to make ends meet. When Apsara is cast in a horror film, she is repeatedly drawn into an unsettling story involving a haunted house and a mysterious past. The line between the film within the film and real life blurs, and eerie events begin affecting her family. Ashwin Saravanan’s 2015 psychological horror thriller is told through two narratives running in parallel and was widely praised for its atmosphere and tight screenplay.

Eeram (2009)

Youtube video

A young woman, Ramya, is found dead in the bathtub of her apartment, and her death is first treated as suicide. Soon after, strange, water-linked occurrences begin around the people connected to her, and a ghostly presence seems to haunt the building. As a police investigation looks into the circumstances, the truth behind her death slowly surfaces, revealing betrayal and a secret someone has tried to bury. Water runs through the film as a recurring motif of dread.

Aanandhapurathu Veedu (2010)

Youtube video

Fifteen years after an accident killed his parents, Bala returns to his hometown with his wife Revathi and their young son Anand, played by child actor Aryan. They settle into the old family house, hoping for a fresh start. The secluded home soon turns unsettling as Bala senses a ghostly presence, and the family is drawn into a supernatural ordeal. Ghosts later help them find a way out when they are held captive in the house.

Pizza (2010)

Youtube video

The iconic debut of Karthik Subbaraj. Michael (Vijay Sethupathi) is a pizza delivery boy who lives with his girlfriend Anu (Remya Nambeesan), a writer of horror stories. Their ordinary life takes an odd turn when Michael delivers an order to a remote, locked-up bungalow, and strange incidents begin soon after. As eerie happenings multiply, the line between Anu’s fiction and what Michael experiences starts to blur, and he must decide what is real. Karthik Subbaraj’s 2012 debut is a horror thriller built around a late twist, which I’ve left out to avoid spoilers. It became a sleeper hit and helped launch Vijay Sethupathi’s rise.

Aval (2017)

Youtube video

Krish, a doctor, and his wife Lakshmi move into a new house in a quiet, isolated hillside neighbourhood. Their only neighbours are Paul and his family, who seem reserved and secretive. Soon, unsettling events begin, and Krish senses that something supernatural is connected to the house next door. As the disturbances grow, he is pulled into a battle between his rational mind and forces he cannot explain, and the couple’s safety is at risk. Milind Rau’s 2017 horror thriller was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi; the latter titled The House Next Door, and the Tamil film was co-written by Siddharth.

From locked rooms and cursed houses to ghosts that may or may not be real, these films show that Tamil horror is about much more than jump scares. So this Halloween, dim the lights, keep a friend close, and press play. Just don’t be surprised if you hesitate before opening the next door or ordering that late-night pizza.
