Sarah Black, a Chennai-based singer-songwriter known for tracks like ‘Maname’ and ‘Maname Neeyae’, has returned with a new single, ‘Winner’. The Tamil and English R&B/pop single captures the moment imposter syndrome fades, and self-doubt gives way to confidence that makes you groove your way from ugly cries to victory laps.
Sung in Tamil and English, it’s an R&B track set on an Afropop beat. Black has called it a banger, but she has also pointed listeners to the lyrics to understand what it’s really about.
Where “Maname” was about holding on, “Winner” is about walking out. She leaves someone who only wanted her when it suited him, and some of the song’s strongest writing is in its Tamil lines.
Along with the release, Black has also launched a Winner Passport site, where fans can make their own vintage-ink card.
