Deputy Prime Minister Awards Malaysian Indian Achievers At Deepavali Open House

The Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail presented awards to a dozen Malaysian Indian achievers at the Pandan constituency Deepavali open house on Saturday.

Held at Padang MPAJ Pandan Indah, the event also featured a silambam demonstration and a pyrotechnic display. The highlight of the night, however, was the 12 Malaysian Achiever awards presented to Malaysian Indians, in recognition of their efforts in various fields.

The twelve recipients are as follows

Sree Abiramee B Chendren

This 7 year old ice skating prodigy has won numerous gold medals in the sport, bringing home a whopping four gold medals at the Ice Skating Institute’s Skate Asia championship in Bangkok. This year, she raked in 5 gold medals at the Middle East 4th official ISI International Figure Skating Tournament in Abu Dhabi.

SJKT Jenjarom

This Tamil school has excelled in science and technology, winning multiple international awards for their innovative creations. Five students from Standard 3 won the Taiwan Special Gold Award for their Waste Bottle Plastic Jewelry creation. They are Yugasuruthi Suresh, Vineetha Chandran, Devadharshini Murugaiyan, Tharunesh Chandrasegaran and Sarruvesh Mohan, under the guidance of teacher Punidah Subramaniam.

Another team from the school won the WYiE Gold Medal and the MiiEX Gold Medal in Hong Kong for their innovation. This team comprised of students Sainesh Ashokkumar, Sathana Sathiamoorty, Tharunesh Murugan, Pooja Elisa Shangker, Santhoshnie Shunmugavelu under the guidance of teacher Shuba Ganesan. The students are in Standard 1.

Suresh Selvathamby

Fondly known as Malaysia’s Hawkeye, Suresh made headlines when he raked in the gold medal in archery at the Paralympic World Championships in Netherlands. Suresh will be competing in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

Thanes Gunasekeran

This bodybuilder has made our nation proud by placing second runner up in the Squeaky Clean Classic Singapore 2019 and the Mr AFD 2019. Most recently, Thanesh clinched the second runner up at the Indonesia Grand Prix Muscle Beach Bali 2019.

Meera Varma Shan

In 2018, this 11-year-old won the silver medal in the World Young Inventors Competition for her invention, Gas Volume Detector & Ordering System. This year, she won the silver medal in the same competition for her invention, the Smart Bin. Meera also took home the gold medal in the International Innovation & Invention Competition, Taiwan for her invention, the CAP 3.

Vikey Magic

Vikneswaran Allagu, better known as Vikey Magic, is a Malaysian magician who has won numerous awards internationally, including the Best Mystical Magician Award 2017 at the Thailand International Magic Extravaganza. He was also awarded Best Endurance Magician 2018 by the International Magician Society USA.

Vikey also won the prestigious Merlin Award and has a few records to his name including the Malaysia Book of Records title as the Fastest To Escape From A Buried Coffin (1min 45sec) as well as Fastest To Escape From Water Torture Cell (2min 3sec).

Nisha Alagasan

Nisha is a karate champion turned entrepreneur. She is the founder of KaraCardio Academy. The national athlete has made us proud in numerous events, winning gold medals at the International Karate Championship Indonesia 2018, World Senior Championship 2014, Asian University Games 2014 and the 2013 Sea Games in Myanmar.

Haresh Varman Shan

This 13 year old has won the gold medal in the World Young Inventors Competition, three years in a row. In 2017, Haresh invented a Wheelchair Fitted Computer to Aid Physiotherapy for Disabled Children. The following year, he won the gold medal for his invention, LiSa – Life Saver. This year, Haresh won the gold medal for his invention, Gas Leak Detector & Alert System.

Theena Thayalan

This 22-year-old boxer won the gold medal at the Tashkent Region Championship, the Wali Kota Cup as well as the Singapore Fighting Championship, where he defeated the Singaporean Sea Games Silver Medalist.

Dr S. Seenevasan

Dr Seenevasan is the first Malaysian Indian to receive the Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Award 2019 presented by NRI Welfare Society (UK Chapter).

Shivendra Thamilarasu

Shivendra is a 12-year-old chess prodigy who has been winning competitions for the past three years.

This year, he was the champion of the Russian Diplomat‘s Day Open Chess Tournament and he was the first runner up in the national level 1st INET Chess Championship U12 and the Ace Chess Champ 2019.

Vishan Nair Birakasan

Vishan is a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Sheffield. This year, he made headlines when he led the rocket team of Sheffield University Nova Rocket Innovation Design Engineering (SunrIde) in launching its “Helen” rocket at Spaceport America Cup, New Mexico.
