Shakti, the renowned Indian/jazz acoustic group formed by acclaimed jazz-fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain in the mid-1970s, will be performing for one night only in Kuala Lumpur on 17 January 2020 at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Shakti Live in Kuala Lumpur is organised by Shiraz Projects Sdn Bhd.
Shakti consists of John Mclaughlin on guitar, Zakir Husain on tabla, Ganesh on the violin, V Selvaganesh handling the percussions, and vocal powerhouse Shankar Mahadevan. The band is back on stage after a long hiatus, due to the tragic loss of mandolin player U Srinivas in 2014, after which the group ceased to perform.
In early 2019 the group once again performed with violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan for a performance in India. For the musicians, this event served as a renaissance of Shakti. With the new formation, it was decided that they would continue to perform and bring the magic of Shakti once again to the public.
“We’re so excited to be going back to Malaysia and bringing a brand new show for the fans who we haven’t seen in years,” said John Mclaughlin. “Our fans in Asia always greet us with so much warmth and we look forward to performing for them after our sell out show in Kuala Lumpur back in 2007.

Formed in 1973 by guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, Shakti pioneered a groundbreaking collaboration of eastern and western musical influences, creating the spanking new genre, fusion. Violinist L Shankar and ghatam player TH Vikku Vinayakram were part of the original band which toured for several years around the world to highly acclaimed praise
For professional reasons, the group disbanded in 1978 and for two decades, each of the musicians followed their own highly successful careers. In the late 90s was the band reformed with Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, U Srinivas on mandolin and Selvaganesh Vinayakram replacing his father Vikku. This brought in another creative dimension to Shakti.
