Are you a travel and street photography junkie? Would you like to be transported into another realm through the images of Malaysia-based photographers? Or do you want to share the joys of photography with your younger cousins and friends?
There’s a pretty spectacular photo exhibition happening this weekend, it is going to be all of this and so much more. Pictures of Life will be held from the 21st of February up until the 1st of March 2020, from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm daily, at GMBB Mall, Kuala Lumpur.
Rising Stellar
This unmissable exhibition is organised by Rising Stellar Sdn Bhd. The company was created by renowned Malaysian photographer, Kamalesan Kamalakaran, with one aim, to organise events that serve as platforms to empower photography industry professionals and youths in Malaysia.
Staying true to the company’s goal, Pictures of Life serves as a platform for local photography talents to showcase their work to the public. Kamalesan and his team feel that the local talents often do not have the chance to interact with the community and inspire the youth. The solution? Pictures of Life. The photographer believes that exhibitions like these are imperative to build a strong foundation for Malaysian visual arts.
Kamalesan says that Pictures of Life will go above and beyond the common themes of travel & street photography. The exhibition sets to explore the boundaries of travel & street photography while discovering what lies beyond. Pictures of Life is curated by Malaysian documentary photographer Mogan Selvakannu.
The photographers featured in Pictures of Life are Irene Yap, Jayanandagobee Arumugam, Jiet Wong, Koggelavani Muniandy, Magendran Subramanian, N Munirah Rohaizan, Siva Kumar, Veronika Read and Vinoth Raj Pillai.
Pictures of Life is supported by Canon Malaysia and Srishti Malaysia. The exhibition is also sponsored by Neha Album and Ilford Photo. GMBB Kuala Lumpur is the venue sponsor for the event.
Budding photographers
The organisers have brilliantly made an effort to rope in photography clubs from Malaysian schools to exhibit at Pictures of Life. In addition to that, they will be providing seminars on photography for students during the exhibition. With this, they hope to inspire the youngsters to utilise photography as a way of expressing themselves.
The theme for the budding photographers is ‘Place, Object, Face’. Mogan, along with the organisers, will provide the support needed for the students to have a successful exhibition. This will include guidance, mentoring and assistance in exhibition setup. The exhibition will also feature an entire day dedicated to FREE seminars tailored for all students.
The schools that will be exhibiting in Pictures of Life are Tenby Schools Setia Eco Park, SMK (L) Methodist Kuala Lumpur, SMK Seri Permaisuri Kuala Lumpur.
In addition to that, Jeeva, a graduate of the Malaysian social enterprise, GoodKids, will also be exhibiting. This talented 17-year-old is currently interning at one of the leading Malaysian Indian wedding photography companies, Shaadi Story.
Giving Back
SOLS 24/7, a humanitarian organization committed to serve, educate and empower poor and underserved communities has come on board this Pictures of Life. They are doing their part for society by organising a field trip for underprivileged school students to visit the exhibition.
Rising Stellar and Mogan will host these students on the second day of Pictures of Life. With this, both SOLS 24/7 and the organisers aim to provide exposure and inspire the school students to use photography as a medium to express their creativity.
