Live speed painting competition Art Battle MY returns for the sixth time this weekend to paint a feminist narrative and prompt conversations on issues about women’s rights. Guess what You are invited! Art Battle MY will be held on Saturday, 22nd February 2020 at GMBB Kuala Lumpur from 4.00 pm to 6.30 pm.

The event features 14 artists who will be tackling the art of battle in 20 minutes. All artists will be given only 20 minutes to work on their pieces LIVE in front of a public audience.

“For the first time in Malaysia, we are organising Art Battle MY to showcase feminist themes through art,” said Ruby Subramaniam, the convener of Art Battle MY. “We intend to use the  power of visual art to convey the demands of gender equality and women’s rights in  Malaysia, and start a conversation about women’s rights ahead of the Women’s March on the 8th of March,”

Art Battle MY will be run by Storyteller Studios, in collaboration with KRYSS Network with the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives with the High Commission of Canada.  GMBB is the official venue partner.

Every year, communities worldwide celebrate International Women’s Day through the Women’s March. Women and allies in Malaysia plan to march for seven demands, namely to end all sexual and gender-based violence; to ban all child marriages; to ensure women’s  rights and freedom to make choices over their bodies and lives.

“Art Battle MY is our way of highlighting issues of women’s rights through what we do best  – promoting the love and appreciation of art,” said Ruby. “The event hopes to break down the demands of the march into visual language so that the audience can understand the objectives of the march, and why women and allies march,”

“We want to encourage and excite young artists, and young people in general, to stand for  human rights. And we hope this event will encourage people to show up and participate in  the march, and make a stand that gender discrimination and sexual and gender-based  violence is unacceptable.”  she said.

Art Battle MY aims to make their way of highlighting issues of women’s rights through what we do best – promoting the love and appreciation of art,” said the founder. It will break down the demands of the march into visual language so that the audience can understand the objectives of the march, and why women and allies march.
