Think Malaysian Indian photographers, and one would almost immediately talk about wedding photography. This, however, isn’t the case. Photographers from our community are doing so much more than that. Pictures of Life, the ongoing photography exhibition in GMBB Kuala Lumpur feature 5 such photographers who are exploring different niches and breaking society’s barriers with every snap.

We recount the five photographers from our community featured at the Pictures of Life photography exhibition.

Siva Kumar Ganesan

Siva Kumar Ganesan is a Malaysian born landscape photographer. He adores aerial shots, and has become a sort of specialist in the field of photography. He often feels that aerial photography gives a degree of freedom in getting different compositions and discovering new perceptions of the world around us.

A quick look through Siva Kumar’s Instagram feed shows his immense talent for capturing the lights and sights of the city from up top. His shots of Kuala Lumpur are so good, that we wonder why he isn’t on Tourism Malaysia’s payroll.

Koggelavani Muniandy

Koggelavani is a social entrepreneur, writer and photographer who is passionate about empowering children and women. Being an avid traveler, she often interacts with the locals and doesn’t shy away from immortalising their lives.

Her work in all areas highlights the need for women to have equal rights and for children to be protected. Koggelavani recently authored and published her book, titled A Bowl Of Kai Tod.  The book chronicles her tales of travel throughout South East Asia. Better yet, her photographs grace the pages too.

Oh, and did we mention? Koggelavani is the co-founder of GoodKids Malaysia, a social enterprise empowering youth using the arts. Excuse us while we bow in honour of this insanely talented photographer.

Set in Rajasthan, ‘Enduring Life’ depicts the life of the women in Rajasthan facing discrimination and gender inequality. Rajasthan holds the record of child brides with 65% of girls getting married before the age of 18 years old. It also has the highest percentage of girls aged between 15 – 17 years old who do not go to school. The discrimination against women manifests in many forms even before they are born. Abortions are done for female foetuses and birth of a female child is not celebrated. Many girls are forced to drop out from school because they need to learn housework and prepare for marriage. @koggelavani #picturesoflifeexhibition #POL2020 #photographyexhibition #photoexhibition #malaysianvisualarts #genderinequality #rajasthan #travelphotography

Vinoth Raj Pillai

Ask anyone who has hired a wedding photographer and they would have heard of Vinoth Raj Pillai, or as he is known in the photography circuit, VRP.

He has carved out a name for himself in the wedding photography game as someone who takes unconventional shots of couples. That aside, Vinoth also takes some pretty awesome non-wedding pictures. He incorporates minimalism with a cinematic style into his photographic visual approach. This photographer is probably best known for using his camera to channel his creative side, thus communicating ideas and telling a story.

‘In Solitude with Mountains’ is a body of work that visually portrays my search for a moment of solitude while leading a productive life as a creative. These images illustrate moments of calmness, freedom and hope within my profession as a photographer. The sublime majesty of the mountainous landscapes in this series is a documentation of moments in my life where I could re-connect with and re-discover myself. @therealvrp #picturesoflifeexhibition #POL2020 #photographyexhibition #photoexhibition #malaysianvisualarts #mountains #solitude #travel #travelphotography

S Magendran

Pahang born S Magendran found his calling in photography more than a decade ago. He became enthralled with dance photography and has worked closely with the Sutra Foundation since 2010.

This photographer has become so in tune with the process of an Odissi dancer that he is able to capture the spirit of the art in his pictures. His devotion to his craft contributes to this. Magendran thinks of it as an honour to be able to eternalise the fine art of dance.

Jayanandagobee Arumugam

An educator by profession, Jayanandagobee Arumugam has never let his day job waver his passion for travel and street photography. He allows his curiosity to get the better of him to immortalise people living their lives.

Interestingly, Jayanadagobee loves photographing local markets. He feels that the hustle and bustle of the peddlers allow him to immerse himself in their lives.

Jayanadagobee seems to have the knack for transporting the viewer into the lives of his subjects. Perhaps this is because he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, literally and figuratively, when it comes to taking a picture. His ultimate aim? Capturing images that enable his audience to connect with their emotions.
