S. Murugamah, 61, who lives alone in Nibong Tebal, Penang, sells dried food items near the market, including anchovies, dried salted fish, and dried prawns. This woman gathers all her strength to cycle from her rented home to a bus stop in Nibong Tebal and walks to Butterworth Jetty with two plastic bags weighing 10kg.
Then she takes a ferry to Swettenham Pier and a bus to the Air Itam and Jelutong morning markets. Her trip to the market takes her three hours in total.
The mother of two daughters has never depended on her children as they’re not in stable conditions as well. Hence, she has decided to stand on her own two feet by having a small business in the market.
Previously, she used to sell food from house to house, but she had to quit after her customers left her in debt. Initially, she had to pay a RM500 monthly rental, but her landlord upon knowing her situation has instead only charged her RM320 for rental.
Let’s give her our support, buy and promote her products!
