Vishwaroopam 2 Crumbles at the Box Office; Kolamavu Kokila Shines

Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2 was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2018. The highly controversial first movie hit the big screens in 2013 and was both a critical and box office success, raking in approximately Rs 106 cr (USD$ 15 mil) at the global box office. So, it’s only natural that the second film opened decently, especially in Tamil Nadu.

However, due to extremely poor critical response and word of mouth, the film started to wither at the box office in the following days. After two weekends, this Kamal Haasan movie has only grossed around Rs 28 Cr globally (US$ 4 mil), with an estimated budget of Rs 50-80 cr (USD$ 7 – 11 million). Of course, the film isn’t at the end of its run yet, but considering movies make the most money in its opening couple of weekends, it looks like Vishwaroopam 2 may not be able to recover its production budget.

Another reason why Vishwaroopam 2 is suffering at the box office is perhaps due to the fact that Kolamavu Kokila hit the big screens this past week. That’s right, a Nayanthara movie is able to halt a Kamal Haasan movie at the box office. How the tables have turned. While Vishwaroopam 2 was bashed by critics and general audiences alike, Kolamavu Kokila, directed by debutant Nelson, received praises all around, which definitely helped to put more butts in seats.

in its opening weekend, Kolamavu Kokila grossed more than Rs 10 Cr (USD$ 1.4 million) at the global box office, something unprecedented for a movie with a female lead. While Rs 10 Cr may not seem like much, we also have to take into consideration the film’s production budget, which is estimated to be a really small, undisclosed figure.
