Inspector Sheila Shares Beneficial Tips on Ways to Protect Oneself Against Scammers

They are on the prowl, and you should be vigilant!

Technology has been a great blessing to us in this last year or so, as the whole world stayed pretty much indoors to fight the pandemic, many tasks have been done via the internet including the way in which we earn an income.

However, too much technology can also be bad. We are prone to many vulnerabilities in the digital world and if we aren’t vigilant about it, we can fall prey to the evil that exist within the realms of technology. Hence, distinguishing between good and evil whilst protecting ourselves from their snares is crucial.

When discussing the bad things that people do nowadays on the tech front, the word ‘scam’ will come through our minds. What exactly is a scam? A scam is a deceptive scheme or trick used to defraud someone of money or personal information.

If someone calls and asks for information that isn’t necessary, don’t give it to them because it’s most likely a scam.

A recent video shared by a Facebook user, Surendran Balaraman, provides a clear understanding of the subject. Inspector Sheila from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department discusses the type of scams and, perhaps more importantly, how we should protect ourselves, in the video.

She sternly stated that personal information such as your identity card number, debit or credit card details, username and password for your online banking and transactions, cheque number, pictures of bank cards or identity card copy should never be revealed over phone calls or Whatsapp.

If you receive such calls, end them immediately and head to the local police station to cross-check your records.

Inspector Sheila also asserts that there are scammers who prey on people who make online purchases. So, bear in mind to only shop on secure websites. However, if you want to make a purchase through Facebook or Instagram, she recommends double-checking the bank account provided by the PDRM CCID portal under the category of ‘Semak Mule.’

Remember, if there has been a previous police case on that particular bank account, you should not initiate any transactions. Also, when purchasing from secure sites such as Shoppee or Lazada, it is preferable to complete the transaction within the application rather than over Whatsapp.

Not only that, but transferring your money to a registered company account rather than an individual account is considered a smarter choice.

When it comes to all of these different types of scams, one in particular needs to be addressed vigorously, and that being none other than investment scams. Any investment that promise guaranteed returns in a ridiculously short period of time has to be investigated and avoided at all cost.

That’s a huge warning sign. It’s a scam. For this form of scam, you should first check to see if the investment company approaching you is registered with Bank Negara.

Overall, what she is attempting to convey is that you should never reveal personal information over phone calls or WhatsApp. Never send money to a third party without first verifying their legitimacy.

Do remember that if you find yourself in this situation, please go to your nearest police station, as they will be able to assist and advise you on what to do next or perhaps carry out an immediate investigation.
