Most of us are aware that Mogesh is well-known for his concerns and efforts to combat environmental issues not only locally, but also globally. On his Facebook page yesterday, the 23-year-old made a new unveiling about his recent accomplishment.
I’m so excited to finally announce that I am a recipient of the prestigious 2021 Diana Award, established in memory of Princess Diana to recognise young people for their social action and humanitarian work.
On the same day as Mogesh, Yi Kang Choo, 22, and Sahana Kaur, 16, also received the prestigious honour at a virtual award ceremony held on June 28th.
The three young Malaysians have garnered national pride after being named among over 300 Diana Award recipients for their active involvement and contribution in social acts and humanitarian work in the United Kingdom in 2021.
According to NST, the Diana Award is given out by the Diana Award Foundation, which was founded in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. The award is given to young individuals aged nine to 25 who go above and beyond in their daily lives to generate and sustain positive change, as well as for their social initiatives or humanitarian efforts.
Mogesh’s passion for the oceans inspired him to co-found Project Ocean Hope in 2017 with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. In 2018, he hosted a trash management forum before taking Project Ocean Hope into schools, where he visits 10 schools every year.
Since then, Mogesh and the Project Ocean Hope team have hosted a series of ocean literacy webinars that have reached over 10,000 individuals in 15 countries.
But this isn’t Mogesh’s first trip into international waters. He was one of five Malaysians that attended the ASEAN Plus Three Youth Environment Forum in 2019 to explore the impact of marine trash.
He also said;
I would like to express my gratitude to the organisers and the jury board of The Diana Award for deeming me eligible to such honour and a huge congratulations to all other exceptionally incredible and inspiring young individuals from different parts of the world who have also received this award.
I’m truly blessed and thankful to God, my family, friends and well-wishers who have always been there for me in all circumstances.
He also thanked the incredible people who have supported him over the years, particularly Dr. Maizah M.abdullah and his team from Project Ocean Hope, Dr. Melissa Martin from Project Epoxonomy, and Mr. Jufitri Bin Joha from Majlis Belia Malaysia (MBM), Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and Projek57, as well as all the lecturers and staff at UMT – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
I’d like to also especially mention Ms. Kavita Maheendran, the exco member of MBM for nominating me for this award. This award would have never been possible without these beautiful souls.
With years of hard work, the young Malaysian is certainly making a difference in saving our oceans. Great job, Mogesh!
