Malaysian filmmakers are certainly raising the bar. Director V.G.Ravyn Manogaran recently garnered his third prize for his short film ‘The Nightmare.’ (Congratulations!)

The Nightmare short film bagged its 3rd award for Best Horror/Sci-fi Short Film at the Almaty Indie Film Fest in Kazakhstan.

The Almaty Indie Film Festival is well known in Kazakhstan, famous for celebrating quality microbudget & low budget indie films. The mission of the Almaty Indie Film Festival is to screen the best of low-budget independent films from around the world. This film festival offers a fantastic opportunity for undiscovered filmmakers to showcase their achievements.

Previously, this short film won Best Film Visual Design Award in the Quarantine Films category in NOX Horror & Fantasy Film Festival 2021 and has also been selected for Terror Molins Film Festivals under the segment Secció Globus.

V.G.Ravyn Manogaran is the writer and director and even produced this film under his own label “Ravynizm Entertainment“. This film was released on 23rd May 2020 with a minimal budget but the quality was impressively very good.

Vidia Liana, a Malaysian actress and voice artist, played the lead role in this film as a heartbroken and lost, young lady who battles with sudden sinister urges that comes in the form of ‘call of the void’ and in the process, she accidentally attracts ‘death’. This psychological horror with an intended social message is portrayed metaphorically.

This film begins with an unclosed tap water running scene, followed by a scene in which Vidia is shown having an intense conversation through a phone call with her lover. The story starts to heat up after she consumes sleeping pills. No more spoilers; watch the entire film to find out what happens to Vidia.

This short film was released on the Vimeo app. Director Ravyn chose the Vimeo platform because he wanted to deliver the film with good quality and hoped to give the audience a good experience while watching his film.

“No matter what content I make, no matter how simple or how grand it is, their first time watching experience matters the most to me,” he wrote on his Instagram.

He also added “All of us have put in some work in Visuals, Color, Sound Design & Original Background Score. It might not be the best but it is our humble & genuine attempt to give you all the best experience possible for this simple homemade Quarantine film,”

“So, prepare your sound system, headphones or good speakers, watch it in 1080p resolution on a big screen if possible & if you prefer watching it on mobile phones, then you may download the Vimeo app for a better watching experience.” he wrote on his Instagram.

You can watch this movie through the Vimeo platform under V.G.Ravyn Manogaran:

Writer’s note “Personally, this was one of the best high-quality horror short films I’ve watched so far, the way each scene was produced with the background score was impressive. Kudos to the entire team!”
