Abimanyu Masilamani, a household name that requires zero introduction in the Malaysian Entertainment Industry has wowed us once again by directing the first English fictional crime series out of Malaysia.

Helmed by the award-winning actor of Ola Bola, Dirty Datuk is an eight-episode crime audio drama that keeps us guessing who’s behind the murder of a high society corporate figure. Penned by acclaimed author Terence Toh, the podcast series is an 8-episode crime caper about the murder of a high society corporate figure and subsequent investigation of suspects leading to a shocking discovery of a disturbing truth.

The crime series depicts the tale of Inspector Murugan and PI Hisham Sabtu. Both cops will take us on an 8 episode roller coaster ride interviewing the suspects;  Laila (the sister), Dr Nicholas (the colleague), Azman (the PA), Melody (the sugarbaby) and Devan (the activist). All of these suspects were the last to have met the Datuk before he was murdered.

Season 1 has just been released and is out on Spotify, Apple and the ZAG website now!

To our surprise, the entire series was rehearsed, recorded and produced remotely in a short span of two months. In addition, the Dirty Datuk cast comprise of a diverse range of actors who are active in the Malaysian entertainment and theatre scene.

“The recording process was a challenge given that the actors hadn’t met in-person before, but this cast is extremely talented and together we found elegant solutions to get that chemistry across. Besides that, we were maniacally thorough in post-production to inject vibrancy and authenticity into the story,” said Abi Manyu.

If you’re a true crime fan, but aren’t sure about audio drama podcasts. The Dirty Datuk podcasts series might just turn you into a believer.
