Kulanthayan, who has been a board member of the Alliance since 2019, is the Third person to Chair the Alliance since its founding and The First from Asia, following Jeffrey Witte and Rochelle Sobel, who were both from the United States, according to a statement released by UPM.

In his acceptance speech, he vowed to do his very best to meet the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030‘s goal of a 50% decrease in fatalities and injuries.

He also urged all member nations to push for their leaders to attend the High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety, which will take place on June 30 in New York, US.

In 2017, Kulanthayan earned the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

Kulanthayan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Resource Economics from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1995, in 1997 he earned a Master of Science Degree in Transport Planning from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia followed by a Doctoral Degree in the field of Transport Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2002.

Furthermore, he graduated from Lund University in Sweden with a Diploma in Traffic Safety in 2007.

The Kota Bharu native has been a member of the National Road Safety Council of Malaysia (MKJR) since 2013 along with the Road Safety Affiliate of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) since 2020.

In the meantime, on the 23rd and 24th of March, the Global Alliance of Non-Governmental Organisations for Road Safety held its Seventh Global Meeting of NGOs Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims in Budapest, Hungary.
