Even if you’re an adult, figuring out the correct spelling of a word can be difficult. Only some who have exceptional talent and memory power would be able to recite it perfectly without making mistakes.

Meet Harini Logan, a super intellectual 14-year-old who clinched the title in the first-ever lightning-round tiebreaker at the 94th Scripps National Spelling Bee competition on 2nd June.

According to Wikipedia, Spelling Bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. To compete, contestants must memorise the spellings of words as written in dictionaries, and recite them accordingly.

The Indian-American was knocked out of the Scripps National Spelling Bee once, before being resurrected. Harini had previously ranked as high as 31st in her four appearances in the Spelling Bee, and this was her first triumph.

The eighth-grader from Texas, who competed in the last totally in-person bee three years ago and persisted during the pandemic to make a comeback, perfectly spelt 21 words in a 90-second spell-off, defeating Vikram by six words.

The competition was steadily whittled down on the final night until Harini and 12-year-old Vikram Raju from Denver advanced to the final round.

The competition went on late, resulting in the first-ever spell-off in the history of the competition, between Harini and Vikram.

Harini is a crowd favourite for her calm and positivism. She is one of the most well-known spellers competing in the bee.

Even though Harini looked a little nervous, she delivered rapid-fire replies to 26 words and accurately spelt 22 of them while Vikram was able to give 19 responses and correctly spelled 15 of them.

Harini will receive $50,000 worth of cash and prizes and a commemorative medal, which includes the official championship trophy from the bee, $2,500 in cash and a reference library from Merriam-Webster and $400 for reference work from Encyclopedia Britannica while Vikram will receive a medal and $25,000 in cash.

Congratulations Harini on this remarkable achievement and good luck on your upcoming endeavours.
