Malaysia Karate exponents, namely Punitha Surez, Kharshanaa Poovanesan, Jivithra Nadarajan and Madhuri Poovanesan have chalked up yet another victory by bagging a gold and bronze medal in the 20th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma), which is currently happening from September 16th to 24th.

Having said that, the karateka Madhuri Poovanesan earned the first gold in SUKMA 2022 through Women’s Karate Kumite under 55kg. Madhuri doesn’t need an introduction as the 23-year-old from Sungai Petani made history by winning the gold medal in the SEA Games of 2019.

Emerged as the second Malaysian to be ranked world number one in May 2019, Under-21 category she has also claimed gold in the women’s team kumite at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games. Bharatanatyam dancer Madhuri took up karate with her parents R. Poovanesan and S. Gokilawani’s insistence at the age of 10.

On the other hand, victory was sweet for Punitha Surez, Kharshanaa Poovanesan, Jivithra Nadarajan and Madhuri Poovanesan as they managed to strike bronze medals in the Malaysian Women’s Team Kumite category.

A special mention to Punitha Surez who clinched the bronze medal under the Women’s 61kg category. Indeed, a remarkable success for the Malaysian karate exponents!
