The remarkable accomplishment of our national team at the international level has made everyone proud.
The National Women’s Junior Squash team bagged the 10th Asian Junior Team Squash Championships title which was held in Chennai recently. The national players handled the pressure admirably against the competitive Hong Kong team, earning a 2-0 victory in the championship game.
The world No 65 player, Aira Azman demonstrated excellent play by defeating Wai Sze Wing for the first point (11-2, 11-9, 11-5) while J.Yasshmita gained the second point for the win by defeating Toby Tse 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, and 11-7.
Yasshmita Jadishkumar stepped up to the plate and trounced her opponent after witnessing Aira’s impressive performance.
The four-player squad, which included Whitney Isabelle Wilson and Doyce Lee who were making their championship debuts, was able to make the national team’s winning streak to extend the national team’s string of victories to four consecutive wins, having won in 2015, 2017 and 2019 previously.
Andrew Cross, the national assistant head coach, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance.
“From the start, Aira did really well to bounce back from her defeat in the semi-finals,” Cross said.
“Yasshmita also did very well even though she got pegged back twice. She did enough to get us over the line and I’m happy that they won the title for the fourth time in a row.”
Overall I think the girls really gelled well together. They knew they had to either win as a team or lose as a team. – Andrew Cross
“I’m definitely happy with the way it’s progressed and two of them, Whitney and Doyce, can still play in the future so it’s a really good result for us.” the coach wrapped.
On the other hand, the boys squad finished the joint-third after losing to Pakistan in the semi-finals.
