Well-deserved recognition for our national squash player! 👏🏼
Sivasangari Subramaniam, who needs no introduction, has added yet another noteworthy feat to her list of accomplishments.
The College Squash Association named our young lass, Sivasangari the recipient of the 2023 Betty Richey Award. This announcement was made on Wednesday (March, 30) during the annual Senior Service ceremony.
Sivasangari stamped another history after becoming the FIRST Cornellian player to receive the Betty Richey Award
The CSA League commissioner, David Poolman, remarked that Sivasangari is the first Cornellian player to ever receive the Betty Richey Award, which is given to a senior player whose play exemplifies the ideals of squash, emphasizing her love and devotion for the game, her strong sense of fairness, and a high level of play.
Siva is one of the best players in the world – says Lily Zelov
Fellow senior Lily Zelov proudly claimed that “Siva is one of the best players in the world, and easily the best player I’ve ever had the privilege of sharing the court with on match day.
“She also plays with poise, grace, and humility, no matter the circumstances. No matter the outcome, she wins and loses with grace.” she continues.
Assistant coach Mark Burke stated that Sivasangari has inspired everyone since the day she joined Cornell squash.
“We all know that she’s one of the best squash players in the world, but her capacity as a leader and a role model, that’s been impressive to watch over the last four years. Siva came back from adversity in recovering from a serious accident. To play for us in the spring, and help us make the top eight teams, has shown immense courage, but also team loyalty, and she really wanted to make that sacrifice in coming back for us.” he said.
Her record speaks for itself – David Palmer
James Broadhead ’57 Head Coach of Cornell Squash, David Palmer, said Siva’s four years at Cornell have been outstanding from the start. “She’s had a huge impact on the team. Her record speaks for itself. I couldn’t think of anyone more worthy of winning the Betty Richey Award. The impact she’s had on the team and our programme has been amazing,” he noted.
“I feel happy – Sivasangari”
She acknowledged her joy at having achieved the Betty Richey Award, which was voted by the college squash head coaches.
“College squash (especially coming to U.S.) was never my plan. But since I’m here, and winning this award, it means a lot to me to close out my college squash career,” the 24-year-old Kedahan said.
“This all goes to the Cornell community. Of course, they’ve been really helpful to me. As an international student, it’s never easy to be so far away from home and balancing both sports and studies. It’s good for me, it’s also good for people around Cornell.” the brilliant player stated.
Prior to entering Cornell, she was ranked as high as 38th in the Professional Squash Association World Rankings and named 2018 PSA Young Player of the Year. Just recently, Sivasangari earned the “Ivy League Player of the Year” for a Second Season In a Row. In 2016, Sivasangari receives the distinguished Asian Squash Federation Performance Award.
Congratulations Sivasangari and keep making us proud with your remarkable feat in this squash sphere!
