Deva’s upbeat and electrifying folk music gave new life to Tamil Cinema. He brought the long-shunned Gaana genre to the forefront. His music transcends borders, welcoming everyone into the indigenous sound and culture of Madras. That is what makes Deva a pillar of Tamil Music.

Here are 10 of his glorious classic tunes.

We begin with an absolute banger, Metro Channel from the Prabu Deva starring film, Indhu. The tempo is fun, flirtatious, and funky with every possible reference to the 90s, presented by the power-packed vocals of SPB.

No better song crowns Deva as the King of Gaana than his seminal piece, Kathadikuthu Kathadikuthu, from the film Ninaivirukkum Varai starring Prabhu Deva. We can see the true depth of Deva’s devotion to Gaana through this fast-paced energetic number.

Salomiya is the unforgettable and addictive tune from the hit film Kannedhirey Thondrinal, featuring the evergreen 90s stars Prashant and Simran. The lyrics written by Deva himself, illuminates the music with playful banter.

Udhayam Theater from the film Anantha Poongatre starring Ajith and Meena is a youthful reminiscence of love. There cannot be a young man from the 90s who didn’t have this song running through his mind as he gazed upon the girl of his dreams. The song is a celebration of love and its etiquettes.

Manam Virumbuthea from the action thriller, Naerukku Naer stars both the young Vijay and Suriya. The song is a fantastic reimagining of Tyagaraja’s classical Carnatic tune Manaveaalakimpa, voiced by 18-year-old Harini, who won a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for this ballad.

Last but not least, the Annamalai Theme Music. The tune has come to be a staple, following the title card for Superstar Rajinikanth before his every film. The theme is one of Deva’s most momentous creations, which he made at the age of 42 when K. Balachandran gave him the big break of his career.
