On June 3, 2023, Thennisai Thendral Deva took place, and it was one of the most memorable musical occasions of the year. A cross-section of Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil was filled to capacity with an enormous crowd of spectators, and the atmosphere was breathtaking.
How many performances there were at the concert is beyond my ability to count on one hand. The crowd started tricking in as early as 3pm and shortly after 4pm, the crew members let the audience in. By 6.30 p.m., the stadium was packed with concert goers, and it seemed that everyone was participating in a small-scale Thaipusam festival. Fans were eagerly waiting for hours to see their favourite idol perform live.
The Malaysian Urumi Melam team [karumarisivakaliamman] was brought out to entertain the audience at 5.20 p.m. to energise and hype up the crowd. The Urumi Melam team’s performance of a single beat from the Basha movie’s autokaran song, which enthralled the audience, was the highlight of the event.
The stadium was packed with thousands of spectators from various states around 6.30 p.m. Revathy Mariappan from Malaysia and Chutti Aravind from India came on stage and introduced themselves as the program’s hosts. Both of them were actively interacting with people. The hosts’ outgoing personalities, spontaneous teasing, and ability to keep things moving geared up the crowd for what was to come. This review constitutes an inside look at what made the night so wild as well as some of the concert’s most memorable moments.
DJ JAY
How do I even put it into words? DJ Jay laid the groundworks for the show. He entered with a lot of energy. I will say the whole crowd was so excited because of DJ Jay. I’ll admit that the crowd was incredibly upbeat as a result of DJ Jay. At first, I thought it would be similar to listening to typical playlists, typical songs, etc. But when he starts playing, I find it impossible to even stand up straight.
He created numerous musical beats, including Mukkala, Kathala Kannala, Thirunelveli Alvada, All Thotta Boopathi, Annakili Nee Vadi, Akkamageh, Macha Kanni, Namma Kattula, Adheeraa, Athiradi Karan, Alagiya Laila, Anthe Arabic Kadaloram, X Poopol En nenjai X Thakka Thaiyyah X Chikku Bukku X Dippam Dappam X Private Party X Katheiyeh ille X Dang dang X Jumbalakka X Secret of Success X Karu Karu X Adiyea Kolluthey X Romeo Attam Pottal X Kappeleri Poyachi X Veerapandi Kottaiyile X Lucky lucky X Kikku Yeruthey X Anjali and many more.
During the DJ performance, the audience sang along with the DJ’s beat, and all were happily dancing. In case it feels like the DJ should not end this part, I still can’t forget the incredible beats and performances of DJ Jay, and I became a overnight fan of his work.
THE ARRIVAL OF DEVA ( THE MAN OF THE SHOW)
When our one and only Deva took the stage, the entire audience screamed at the top of their lungs. First, everyone in the crowd looked at the seating areas because they assumed Deva would enter the stage from among them. However, when he suddenly appeared on stage, we were all unable to remain silent. He was extremely touched by the outpouring of support. Unquestionably, that was a truly memorable experience.
SP CHARAN ( ATHANDA ITHANDA ARUNACHALAM)
Remembering the legend, SP Balasubramaniam, on his birthday with this perfect song (Athanda ithanda Arunachalam). When SP Charan started to sing, the audience was astounded and surprised to hear SP Charan’s voice in exact imitation of his father. Such a heartfelt rendition by SPB Charan during Thennisai Thendral Deva.
HERE COMES” SALOMIYA” BY THENNISAI THENDRAL DEVA
The crowd went wild when the BGM of Salomiya began to play. Literally, the stadium was filled with screams that could be heard from outside. When the lyrics “Salomiya” were about to be sung, our Thennisai Thendral Deva turned his microphone towards the crowd, and the entire audience began singing. Once again, he was so touched by the audience’s love for him.
ONE AND ONLY HARIHARAN ( AVAL VARUVALA)
The Aval Varuvala song was performed by Hariharan, who is renowned for his adaptable voice and beautiful renditions. What else can I tell you? To hear and witness the legend’s voice, the crowd fell completely silent. The song’s melody was enhanced by his soulful voice, which made sure it would live on in our memories forever. He is well-known in the Indian music industry thanks to his soulful performances and adaptable voice.
HARINI ( MEGHAM KARUKUTHU)
To date, whenever it rains, we automatically sing Megham Karukuthu. And now we’ve got the chance to witness the lively vibe of the song from the person itself (Harini). Even after all these years, this song still sounds fresh. When the audience hears it live, that feels amazing.
UNNIKRISHNAN
The talk of the show was Unnikrishnan‘s entry. Salam Sejahtera Malaysia and Apa Khabar Malaysia were his opening speeches. The crowd responded to him after hearing that. It was pleasant to see artists interact with the audience in a language that they were not familiar with.
SRIKANTH AND ALKA
Srikanth and Alka performed the Lalaki Dol Dappi Ma song. As we all know, the song gave us super-duper energy. The audience was extremely powerful and we danced throughout the performance.
ANURADHA AND UNNIKRISHNAN ( MEENAMMA)
Unnikrishnan and Anuradha Sriram are unavoidably remembered whenever the Meenamma song is mentioned. This song is now well known, even to 2K kids. This song contains that much love. What do you think the next performance will be? The emcee queried the crowd. The crowd yelled out “Meenamma” in a matter of seconds. I would say that I was literally waiting for the artists to perform this song.
ACTOR JAI’S ENTRY
Actor Jai, who is well known for Subramaniampuram (the movie), was there. Literally, no one knew about his entry, and suddenly, when he appeared, the whole stadium went crazy. For a few minutes, the crowd did not let him talk with the constant cheers. When our emcees asked him questions about Malaysia, he praised it by heart; he even told the audience that Malaysia was the first foreign country that he had travelled to. And our emcees make him dance his signature step “Maasama”. That was too cute to be lively. Our Thennisai Deva revealed that Jai was his cousin and a very talented actor.
MALA MALA MARUTHAMALAI
When this song comes on, we all instantly think of our hostels and towels. I still find it hard to believe that a few fans brought their own towels and reenacted the dance at their zones while Anuradha and her band were performing this song. Even our Thennisai Thendral Deva was shocked to see that. That was a funny moment.
BASHA SUPER STAR
Who doesn’t know Superstar Rajinikanth? Even a child can tell us who he is. Known for his uniquely styled lines and idiosyncrasies in films, he has a huge fan base throughout the world and a cult following. The movie Basha is one of the blockbuster hits of our superstar. And the movie songs are mega hits. On the digital screen, the most iconic scene of Basha was played, and our Thennisai Thendaral Deva and the team composed the background music for it. When Super Star started to walk, the entire stadium erupted in hearty applause. One more was requested to Deva by the audience. And without a second thought, he composed again. That was definitely a goosebump moment of Thennisai Thendral Deva’s concert.
MACAREENA MACAREENA
This song took the show to another level. A style of dance with exaggerated hip movements was included in this song. This song became a chartbuster. The younger generation was drawn in by “Macarena Macarena,” which featured Vijay’s zingy and Shilpa Shetty’s adorable dance moves. People often say that “vibes speak louder than words,” and I realised that when this song was performed on stage by the artists, the entire stadium began to vibe and dance along with it.
KAATHADIKITHU X MEENATCHI
These two were masterpiece songs of Thennisai Thendral Deva. At the end, it created an explosive wrap to Thennisai Thendral Deva’s concert that night. The whole stadium was seen jumping, dancing, and singing along. As the song reached its climax, it left the audience breathless. The finale was indeed an explosive one as the crowd sang along to “Kathadikithu and Mennatchi,” repeated over and over, creating a powerful and unforgettable energy to the concert.
Finally, I must acknowledge the outstanding work of the musicians, band, and dancers. They should all be recognised for their contributions, as they were all important to the concert’s success.
POKETPLAY FILMS AND CITY PRODUCTIONS
Thanks to Poket Play Films and City Productions, the Thennisai Thendral Deva concert was a huge success. This amazing concert would not have been possible without their efforts. They played a key role in realising the concert’s vision, and their attention to detail made sure everything went off without a hitch. The level of talent and commitment that Poket Play Films and City Productions put into this project is truly amazing.
Outstanding work by the entire team and crew!
Before I conclude this review, let me share this lovely thought about Deva. The concert was a celebration of both music and the teamwork that Deva instilled in his musicians. Deva was praising each and every artist in the concert by sharing their professional journeys with the audience.
It was evident that Deva’s goal was to foster an atmosphere in which each artist felt valued and recognised for their individual talents.
