Tamil films in India best known as Kollywood industry. Kollywood is one of the major film industries in India, producing a large number of Tamil-language films each year. Kollywood is known for its unique storytelling, vibrant music, and talented actors, and it has a huge fan following not only in Tamil Nadu but also among Tamil-speaking audiences around the world.

The history of Tamil cinema dates back to 1918 when the first silent Tamil film, “Keechaka Vadham,” directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar was released. Over the years, the industry has evolved and seen significant growth, producing films in various genres, including drama, romance, action, comedy, and more. The first Tamil talking feature film, Kalidas, a multilingual directed by H. M. Reddy, was released on October 31, 1931.

Kollywood movies have a significant global audience, especially in countries with a sizable Tamil-speaking diaspora, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and certain parts of the Middle East. Some films have also gained popularity internationally and among non-Tamil-speaking audiences.

Re-releasing movies that had released earlier has become recent trend in Kollywood industry. But, not all the films which had re-released, were well received among audience. The movies which were re-released during recent times has proven that, not all the movies will gain success from re-releases. Here are few movies which gain massive hit through re-release.

1. Ponniyin Selvan 1

Ponniyin Selvan is Tamil Historic fiction novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The novel which includes a total of 2, 210 pages, narrates the history of Chola prince Arunmozhivarman. The well known director Maniratnam took the initiative to direct the epic “Ponniyin Selvan” as a film. The cast of the movie includes Prakash Raj, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Prabhu, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Jayaram and many others. 2. Baba

“Baba” is a Tamil language movie that was released in 2002. It was directed by Suresh Krissna. The film features Rajinikanth, Manisha Koirala, Goundamani, and Sujatha in prominent roles. The plot revolves around Baba, a carefree youthful atheist who is the reincarnation of a renowned saint from the Himalayas. Baba is taken to Mahavatar Babaji, whom Baba was a follower of in his previous incarnation, after various twists and issues caused by corrupt local politicians. The divinity challenges Baba to conquer numerous materialistic world illusions and grants him seven wishes. The rest of the story revolves around how he uses the wishes while acquiring spirituality and clashing with the enemies.

Rajinikanth’s performance, as always, was praised by his fans. However, the movie’s lengthy runtime and its unconventional approach to spirituality were among the factors that contributed to its underwhelming performance. Overall, “Baba” remains an important film in Rajinikanth’s filmography, as it reflects his interest in exploring spiritual and philosophical themes through the medium of cinema.

Due to that, Super Star thought of re-releasing Baba. The movie was re-released on 12 December 2022 which was on the birthday of the King of Style, Superstar himself. Notably, the movie was also released in few theaters in Malaysia as well. The movie received a massive celebration.

3. Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu

“Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu” is a popular Tamil-language crime thriller film released in 2006. It was directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and starred Kamal Haasan and Jyothika in lead roles. “Manjal Veyyil” and its lyrics perfectly suited as the final note to wrap up Harris’s well-known “Hearts Of Harris” concert in Malaysia.
